Ever since we moved into our current place we’ve had TV issues, the aerial on the chimney is clearly no good/pointing in the wrong direction but it’s not been a huge issue as we have Virgin cable in the living room.

Two issues now:
1) Virgin are taking the piss with their price rises and we want rid but have no standard Freeview services to fall back on
2)We’ve installed another TV in the kitchen which only gets sporadic service which is very annoying

We had a local company around to quote repair and it’s £420 (inc VAT) and this seems like an awful lot!

Am I being tight here or is this just how much these things cost?

Tha sounds way over the top unless they are putting an amplifier/splitter in & running cables inside the house. I'd get some more quotes.

Depends how difficult it is to get up to your chimney and how long/complicated the cable runs are.
It is false economy to replace the antenna without renewing the cabling.

Hardware cost should be about £100 for most installations, maybe a touch more if you want a decent distribution amp to send the signal to multiple TVs.

A lot of cowboys claim you need a 'special' antenna for the 'new-fangled digital transmitters' or for some other obscure reason.

What's the parts/labour split?

Yup.

New aerial and pole on roof. Cabling down the front and back, new aerial socket in front room.

Still feels expensive....

Bit further south I’m afraid, Plymouth!

Interesting conversation with the wife last night who thinks it’s a bargain, she’d thought it would cost twice that!

Get some more quotes, that would be half that price up here in Bristol.
Find a small independent, the big boys can charge silly money.

How much would it cost you to do it yourself?

From what you've said, it seems quite high although we don't know exactly what it entails so it's difficult to gauge.

Have you tried to get a quote from elsewhere?
