The awards are organised by Seafish, the public body that supports the £10 billion UK seafood industry. Seafish say there are a number of 'rigorous judging stages' to overcome en route to being named the best fish and chip shop in the UK. It’s starts with customer nominations and the includes mystery shopper judging visits and full business performance audits of premises, followed by presentations to an industry judging panel.

Shap Chippy is in Shap, not Penrith which is 10 miles away.

Don't know why it annoys me but it does.

Chip shed is decent. Beef dripping cooked chips being the secret. Expensive though and small portions. Personally prefer St Johns on a good day.
Laughable that no Whitby establishments made it though tbh!

Yes I’m surprised one of the Whitby chippys aren’t on there.

My local, Cods Scallops is on there which is awesome. Beef dripping chips and every type of fish you can imagine

Bugger. I was in North Norfolk last week, visiting the parents in Sheringham, and my brother was up too. We went to Wells, but not for a fish supper. Next time...

That said, Galton Blackistone has opened a chippie in Cromer, which apparently (as one would expect) is "a bit good".

Fiddlers Elbow - Leintwardine, Herefordshire, my local chip shop (3 miles away). Expensive, but they are really good, and easily a cut above anywhere else I've been.

Lows and Carron are nowhere near the best in Scotland for fish and chips. Not even remotely close.

i live in Shap (25 years) and the Fish and Chips have never been better. It has changed hands a number of times in my infrequent visits, once or twice a year. I cannot say its the best but it is the best I have had for a very, very long time.

The problem with these awards is that they are run by sea fish and not every chippy in the country is a member of theirs so there is a lot of fantastic chipshops that arnt in the running.

Indeed. Much like any other award scheme. I just posted it because it might give people a suggestion to try somewhere different locally

The Magpie in Whitby is utter garbage compared to decent chip shops. Ive never understood why folk seem to like it. They queue out of the door for less than average fish n chips.

Ive visited most of the chip shops in Whitby, with Magpie and Trenchers being he worst. Some f the best chips have been at the pubs.

Of all those I've tried so far, Mr Chips is probably my favourite.

WHITBY CHIP SHOPS

Hadleys, Bridge Street
Robersons, Bridge St
Mr Chips, Bridge Street
The Middle Chippy, Bridge Street
Riverside Fisheries, Bridge Street
Russels, St Anns Staith
Quayside, Pier Road
Magpie, Pier Road
Trenchers, New Quay Road
Royal, Baxtergate
Silver Street Chip Shop
Railway, Fishburn Road
Angel Fisheries, Angle Yard off Baxtergate
