After two years of having an A2 and a 'big bike' i came to the conclusion i wasnt doing the mileage to warrant having a 'real' bike and i preferred just local short riding and just doing odds and sods of nessercerry trips by bike so got ride of the big bikes and brought a premium 125 that i seem to be using much more.

Have i lost it or have other people done it?

You’ve lost it I’m afraid.

I would never go back to a 125 through choice from a ‘big bike’ just feel much more stable, confident and safer on a bigger bike. I would have a scooter due to the storage etc but not a bike. But that’s just my opinion.

I think it depends on the 125. I borrowed a mates KTM Duke a few weeks ago and for round town and down the little lanes it was more fun than any of my sportsbikes. OK a proper KTM would probably have lots of fun as well but I enjoyed myself.

I have a test ride booked on a ktm duke 390 week after next.

I love my blade, but i am not using its potential on the road and am going to get in trouble soon - it will be demoted to long trips, Special tides and track duties.

I borrowed a friends duke 125 and it was great fun nailing it everywhere and was so much easier to throw about on the mountain roads - it was just lacking a bit of oomph that i hope the 390 will provide

What is classed as a premium 125?

Not sure I'd go back to a 125, but my next bike will definitely be mid-size, something like a 70's 350 four/twin. Then again, my favourite bike only has 14.5 bhp at the back wheel. BSA 250 Starfire.

Presumably one that doesn't dissolve during its first winter?

I think you're mad with a 125 OP, but I'd consider an A2 bike instead of full power...

A grom/msx is fun for some things but a normal size 125 isn't much lighter than 250/300 which seems a better compromise for maintaining 60mph.

There’s nothing wrong with a 125. They’re really handy, light and economical.

It’s like driving a little Citroen AX after you’ve been in diesel pickups for years - a refreshing change.

If you have a big bike and you need a smaller bike for practical reasons, the trick is to have both big and small bike.

I've done more miles on the Grom (msx125) than anything else this year, having a blast on it tbh

Picking a 125 when you have an A2 licence seems a bit arbitrary. Why not go for a Duke 390 or similar that at least has some power in reserve if needed?

I can understand if it was just for a few mile commute and you had a big bike you didn't want to bother dragging out for a short trip. I can't see why anyone would choose to ride only a 125 unless bikes are just a mode of transport and not a passion.

I often have a hankering after an RS125. I wanted one when I was 17 but had a DT instead and passed my test within a week of turning 17 and went straight to a 250 then 600. Really I'd love an RS250 but cant afford one but I'd happily thrash an RS125 about as well as the GSXR 1000 I currently have.

People have a passion (or lack of) for all sorts of bikes, from AP50s to Panigales. I don't think performance has anything to do with it.

I struggle to understand how people have a passion for stamp collecting. But each to their own beer

Since passing my test 10 years ago I only had 750cc + bikes but in the last year went to a SV650 and I'm enjoying being out on the bike more than ever.

The only thing it lacks is the down the road G but I only really ride it on twisty B roads so its not a problem.

A 125 is a big step down but I can imagine having fun on it on the right roads. If you mainly ride fast A roads linked by roundabouts it would get tiring quickly but otherwise I'd rather that than no bike and big bikes are really expensive to run.

I can see the appeal of a light bike but personally if I was thinking light bike I’d try to find 250-400cc.
