Hello,

So I have had my CBT for 2 years and my car license for 4 years. My CBT just expired and I am going to renew it again however I want to know what is next on the license category as I want to start riding bigger bikes. Currently im riding a CBR125 on the CBT with L plates and no passengers. What license can I do next? A1/A2/A? Do I need to do A1 before A2 or can I just do the A2 license? Or can I wait until im 24 years old and go straight to doing category A license? I am 22 years old.

Thanks.

Maybe you should read it again because it does answer your question.

From what I understand, you will be able to do your A2 licence and then after a further 2 years it will automatically progress to an A licence so you can ride anything after that.

Generally, you'll find BB welcoming to noobs. Your attitude, however, may influence that.

To respond in your own style:

Didn't you read anything the government website content bod wrote?

2 Standard motorcycle up to 35 kW (and a power-to-weight ratio not more than 0.2 kW per kg), bike must not be derived from vehicle more than twice its power

Direct access route - theory and practical

Progressive access route - 2 years experience on A1 motorbike and a further practical test (age 19+)

So basically DAS. Hope you're less prone to tantrums when you're riding. You'll live longer.

It doesn’t progress automatically. You need to do your practical tests again on a suitably powered bike to demonstrate you can handle it, once you’re old enough to progress to the next class. Nothing to stop you taking an A1 or A2 test even if you’re older than 24 either, but you can skip those go straight to A if you are

Why should anyone read it when you haven't read the obvious sticky section which had a huge, detailed thread about licences and what you need, never mind the hundreds of easily Googled pages.

You are being a throbber with that attitude. If you can't determine what you need from a succinct and definitive reference, then join Mumsnet.

the website doesnt mention anything about having an A1 license with a CBT and full car licence. It says A1 licence achieved by doing a CBT, theory and practical. How do I know if I have a A1 licence with a car licence.

the user who originally replied to my question was the one being ignorant as he sends me a link to the website. Sorry to offend you but I have been on the website and needed some clarification hence the reason I wrote this post. Doesnt help if you reply back with a link.

It doesnt show the answer as it says you have an A1 licence when you do the CBT, theory and practical. Does not mention having a car licence.

As for my spelling, im sitting at work trying to reply back in a busy environment. Also, apologise english is not my first langauge and I did not know this would be an english teaching class.

As for everyone else pointing fingers at me, I came here for some clarification. I have been through google and the website. It mentions a theory and practical test. Does not clarify if that is achieved with a car licence. Posting a reply with a website does not answer the question.

so from what i understand by the kind users "justatwist" and "zakalwe". I have my CBT now and all I need to do is a practicaly test and I will have an A2 license. No theory tests...Correct?

Thanks for the reply. If you look at the licence categories. It says to get an A2 licence, either I will need to pass a theory and practical OR I can go onto an A2 licence by doing only a practical test IF I have 2 years of experience on an A1 motorbike which I do as I have been riding my 125 for 2 years on a CBT with a car licence. So effectively I already have an A1 licence and to go to an A2 licence, I need to do a practical test (Progressive route).

Your saying it doesn't matter if you have a car licence or not, you still need to do theory and practical. So why does it say if you have 2 years of experience with a 125cc, you can get a A2 licence by just doing a practical test?

Sorry if its me not understanding. The bike licence categories are all over the place.

I guess what I am trying to say is, Do I have an A1 licence currently with a CBT and a car licence and 2 years of experience riding a 125 OR will I need to start with the A1 licence first and get the theory and practical done to move on to A2.

If you have only done the cbt then it doesn't matter how long you have been riding all you have done is the basic training. You only get an A1/A2/A license by doing the theory test followed by 2 practical tests.

The practical tests are the same for each license category, the only difference is the power of the bikes you take the test on.

Do you need to upgrade your bike or are you happy on the 125?if the 125 is OK and you don't need to go on motorways just do a cbt refresher then wait until you are 24 and then go straight for the A license. If you want a bigger bike now then do the A2 now.

I belive there is no automatic A2 to A upgrade. You need to take the practical tests.

Thats fine I have understood now and I wasnt saying I want to go to an A license. I was just wondering if I need to do the A1 licence first and then the A2 license or if I can go straight to the A2 licence.

Thank you!

It has made sense to me now.. Im 22 years old and I can either do a direct access route for the A2 licence by doing a theory and practical OR wait until I am 24 years old where I can go for the A licence by doing a theory and practical. So I do not need to do the A1 licence at all.

However, the reason I was asking is because in a way it would be better to do the A2 licence now and then with 2 years of experience, I will only need to do a PRACTICAL test to get the A licence. On top of that, at least I will have some experience riding an A2 bike... or wait till 24 years old, get onto a 400cc+ bike and die.

I'm guessing you'll do your A2 on a bike that's bigger than 400cc!

I'd wait and do my A licence, rather than waste ££££s for the sake of 1yr and however many months till you're 24.

Happy on your 125 for 2 years? Wait and do the DAS for an A licence. Want something a bit bigger now/ride motorways/take pillion? Do your DAS now for an A2.

Doing it now will give you 2 years of insurance history on a cheaper to insure bike, so might save you in the long run if you plan on getting a Hayabusa when you’re 24

I understand but I have heard you shouldn't really go from a 125cc straight to a 600cc so maybe it would be ideal to do the A2 licence first and get some experience on the medium sized bikes before I go and jump straight on to a 600cc + no more l plates + I can carry pillions.
