I'm off to China in October for Canton Fare. I understand i need a Chinese Visa...

Can anyone recommend where to get one from and also time frames?

I did mine in London

Everything you need is here, you will also need an invitation letter from someone in China.

It’s a ball ache to do, but once you go to the appointment its about a week to get your passport back.,

All needs to be done in person now.

I used Visa24 who have an office on the same street. They have various ‘fixers’ hanging around within the embassy queueing area reserving line positions, etc. A member of staff will escort you through the whole process. It’s really chaotic in there! And yes, has to be done in person now as finger prints are taken.

I’ve been to the Canton fair a few times so let me know if you have any other questions!

This adds no value to your question OP sorry, but just thinking how much things have changed!

I went to China in 2009 for a month as part of a bigger trip, trying to get a visa from the UK was a right ball ache, pages of forms, submit a full itinerary, proof of activity to include full receipts for every hotel, train, bus etc (fully paid receipts not booking confirmations) and we were told if we were heading too far off the tourist trail the chances of getting the Visa were a 50/50.

The outlay was too much for those odds so we took a different gamble and applied in Delhi instead less than a week before our flight to Beijing... One form, leave your passport for 24hrs and something like $50USD, simple a that!

I've been twice, each time on business and needing the itinery, invitation letter etc.

Used a company in Manchester both times, relatively pain free but theres some admin needed. Let me know if you want the company name.

Did it recently. Book the earliest appointment you can get and then get there an hour before it!

The appointment times mean nothing from what I can tell it's just a way of controlling the queue of people at the front desk. I waited roughly 2-3 hours for a 10 minute appointment.

Collecting your passport is a breeze and took 5 minutes

London embassy for me,.

I went in 2016 to visit a show room of a trading company.
Oddly, the company issued me an invitation from a completely different company which I'd never heard of, but I think that's because they're registered in HK.
I had to use a company in Manchester, but I had to Special Delivery my passport to them, and back again. You can track the application online too once it's been received. I was worried about being without my password for two weeks mind!

I walk past that office most mornings and there is always a long queue before it opens.

Thanks for all the advice! I went today to process the visa and used Visa24 as someone else mentioned on here. They walked us into the visa office and my god it was carnage in there! We were taken right through the crowds and sat down with someone immediately. There was definitely something going on with the agency guy and the visa person behind the counter they obviously knew each other or had some sort of arrangement for us to go in there and be seen immediately. I was there for about 15 minutes and it was all done and dusted. Most of the other people in there had been there hours from what I heard!

Great! Yep, it’s worth the money. Weirdly since I recommended Visa24 I’ve since booked an appointment for my wife to get her visa on Monday! Fingers crossed we’re done as quickly !
