BOTH back on BBC iPlayer and available for 11 months.

So I'm not going to get anything done for a while.

This reminds me to dust off my DVD's of both series. Last time I watched them I did so over a single weekend.

will I succeed in watching these for the first time at last?
Always seems so naff and dated when I try. Maybe I should have seen them at the original time of broadcast.

Both superb series, and if anyone hasn't watched them they should certainly give them a go. Plus Keeley Hawes of course smile

Thanks for the heads up. Both shows are amongst the best TV I've ever seen and have been planning to watch the whole lot again. You've saved me from buying the (bloody expensive) A2A DVDs.

Just finished watching both seasons of Life on Mars. I enjoyed it more this time than when it came out in the 00's.
Ashes to Ashes nextclap

And don't forget Liz White as the rather nice young WPC.

(Also played a dinner lady in Teachers.)

You need to watch the series rather than dip into it.

Each individual episode is an affectionate Sweeney Homage that can be naff, sometimes intentionally. Though at their best they work well as a police procedural in their own right.

The series as a whole is a lot darker and more interesting. A 'story arc' as the serious fans say.

What's so clever is that almost every episode both works individually and also moves the story arc on. As opposed to the X files or even Battlestar Galactica where some episodes work individually but are regarded by the serious fans as fillers, and others move the story on but are a bit dull for the casual viewer.

Life on Mars season 3 is currently being planned. John Simm has confirmed that he is in discussions over reprising his role as Sam Tyler.

Be interesting to see how that would work given how Ashes to Ashes ended...

If I'm being brutally frank, the whole Time Travel / Limbo / Purgatory thing was best ignored. As far as I remember (can't believe it's been 15 years!) between the first and last episode it was mostly the Gene Hunt 70s Cop Show.

Just re-watching these at the moment, series 2 is showing on the Drama Channel at 9.00pm each Friday.

Still enjoying them and forgot how good the theme tune is. smile

Or how life on Mars ended come to that. It would be like having a sequel to Animal Farm.

Life on Mars didn't end as such, they all just drove off. Sam Tyler died later on. The 3rd season would cover the period between the last episode of season 2 and Ashes to Ashes.

Am I alone in also liking the American version of Life on Mars? Similar at first but a totally different ending. Just the 1 series though

Yes you could almost take away the weird voices and ghosts st and it would still be a pretty good programme!

I can't believe it's been that long either.

At the very end of Ashes to Ashes, whilst Gene Hunt is looking through the brochure of a 190E Cosworth, a bloke wanders in to the police station moaning about his iPhone. I always wondered whether they'd do another series from that point...
