I know new car purchase threads are nowhere near as exciting as someone who has squandered their money on a broken old heap that will be a total weight around their neck until they sell it for a fraction of what it owes them, but I thought I'd start a thread for my new car. I didn't deliberately intend to get it on the 1st day of the new registration plate, but waiting a week extra got me the childish amusement of a 69 plate on the car.

To give it it's full name it is an MX5 2.0 GT Sport Nav+ in Soul Red Crystal with the sand leather interior. It's the 2019 with a bit more power and more importantly a higher rev limit. I've had Apple Carplay installed as a dealer option, and the Mazda lowering springs which are supplied by Eibach.

Only a few photos so far as I've spent the day driving it!

No photos I've seen do justice to the paint colour, I had initially regretted my decision not to get an obnoxious orange 30th AE car, but my regrets are now gone.

I've covered over 100 miles today and many of them have been laugh out loud fun. I think this one is a long term keeper.

Looks great, I guess your challenge is to try and take some pics that do do justice to the paint :-)

Have you had/driven MX-5s before? Not surprised it's fun, the revised 2.0 sounds like classic naturally-aspirated tuning and just the right amount of power.

Did you order it, or was it in stock?

I covered 60K in a 1994 NA V-Special a couple of years ago, and have driven a few others. I was interested in the ND when it came out but found the 2.0 too strained and the 1.5 just a touch too weedy.

I was looking to order a car in exactly this spec and was told by several dealers that they were accepting no more factory orders and it was stock/channel cars only. Fortunately Mazda Swindon had this car on it's way over from Japan so I got exactly what I wanted. The dealers now have pre-reg or the odd 30th AE car only, they are turning work away which is causing them problems as it was a fairly big seller for them. Mazda have given them no indication of when they can start placing orders again, and they are in a sticky position with this 95g/KM fleet average coming into force in January.

I have just finished an early morning drive from Cardiff to London in it, and was pleased at how well it performs on the motorway. I agree with quite a lot of what reviewers have said but disagree with a few things; for a start it really isn't noisy at motorway speeds, I found it was dominated by road noise rather than wind noise. The ride is properly jiggly, but seems to totally avoid harshness and crashiness to an impressive extent. Without wanting to sound like a What Car? reader I was also extremely impressed by the 45mpg average I managed on the journey (it was generally law abiding).

It looks great. The Mazda metallic red really does light up nice.

If you're keeping it for the long haul, it might be worth having it properly rust-proofed. There's a guy local to me who's done some rust-proofing on my Land Rover, and he does a lot of new Mazdas - he says they have very little protection (if any).

Isn't it just a GT Sport+? Still top-spec so lucky you, but I thought the GT dropped the nav bit (Even though it still has nav...)

I only know this because my dad picks up his RF on Wednesday, same colour as yours, same trim level.

Lovely jubbly.

The configurator calls it a GT Sport Nav+. As an RF does he have the auburn leather in it? I liked that a lot.

I have been thinking about rust proofing - do you have details for that chap? My concern might be that Mazda could use any aftermarket rust proofing as an excuse not to honour any bodywork warranty claims. I do think the MX5 rust concerns are rather overstated, it wasn't until they were a decade old that first NA models started needing welding, and most NCs I see are fine even though they are knocking on for 14 years old. We're not talking British Leyland or 90s/00s Mercedes propensity for tin worm.

I just managed a hilarious slide around an empty roundabout on the way back from Tesco, the car is as much of a laugh as my NA, although the lowering springs have tamed the comedy body roll which makes the car feel a bit more serious. Not sure how I feel about that yet.

I'm near Inverness if that's any use. I've spoken to the chap recently about something else, and he's fully booked for the rest of this year (he doesn't do rust-proofing between the end of September and the beginning of April due to the road salt).

I don't know much about MX5's and rust other than some internet comments. I seem to remember reading that some NCs were quite badly corroded after a few years. However, I think it's not just the bodies which are at risk - apparently all the under-car components (such as sub-frames) have an almost non-existent coat of paint, so it doesn't take too long before they can look fairly scabby. I suppose it also depends if you're driving it year-round. I'm not sure if after-market rust-proofing would affect a bodywork warranty claim.

Very nice. I will be ordering myself one of these at some point in the new year. The deal was done for me when the new 2.0 was released and how much positive feedback its had. I'm stuck between colours though Machine Grey or Soul crystal red, both stunning.

Interesting information about Mazda not taking factory orders, I've done a few configurations on carwow and I've had dealers contact me with no trouble on the spec. Reading online I'm confused whats going on, some say its Brexit/tax reasons, I also heard a rumour that the MY2020 MX5 will get a facelift, maybe they are clearing out stock?

It is a mystery, I'm interested to see if there is a 2020 update. I'd have liked adaptive cruise (very little weight added, and very useful) and standard CarPlay, beyond that it's the MX5 I always wanted.

I've looked under a few and yes, it's the subframes a lot of people refer to.

At three years old the subframes can look pretty rusty.

Great cars, I've yet to try the newer, higher powered one.

Enjoy...

Its got me a little concerned either way, I could order one now but its far from ideal and my girlfriend would go mental. Do you have the Bilstein dampers with those springs, ride height looks much much better. Any plans for it?

Lovely looking car, as you say pics don't do the colour justice frown
When the lowering springs were fitted was the geo done? (Done properly)
Regarding the rustproofing have you seen the HubNut video where he had a car done?

The geo was done by the dealer, they even did the procedure to level the lights again. I am toying with the idea of a little trip to Wheels in Motion in a couple of weeks. The car is away for a few days next week to have a ceramic coating put on it by a local detailer to try and keep the seagull st damage at bay...

I'll find that hubnut video. It may well be worth getting it done.

Congratulations OP on buying what looks like a very very nice car.
It's amazing to me that there is talk of rust prevention on a one day old car though.

I'm soon to take delivery of a 1999 tenth aniversary Miata mx5 with 28,000 mile on the clock.

It's virtually rust free. It's spent most of its life in a garage and half of its time in a warmer part of France.

I'm excited to be honest.

Enjoy that lovely mx5.

I realised that I was in serious danger of having to hand in my "proper man" card as I hadn't popped the bonnet for a look.

No plastic covers in sight, and a lovely alloy cam cover. Lots of DI chatter at idle with the bonnet open!

I love the "obnoxious orange", although I don't think that's it's official name. I think it's Racing Orange.

I think that's a mistranslation from the original Japanese for "obnoxious orange" hehe

I absolutely love the orange, they really need to offer some better colours on these cars.

I just put in a cheeky £150 offer on a set of 16" ND wheels a chap wanted £250 for, and it's been accepted. Looks like I'll be mobile all winter too on little 16" biscuit tyres.
