Does anyone advertise on Facebook?

I am reading more and more that small businesses are getting decent returns.

What are the costs like? I assume they bill like google?

Anything I need to know which is a show stopper? Is it worth it compared to Google?

Cheers

Yes we do,

costs depend on your audience size, campaign length etc.

You can pick quite specific demographics, women, within a 20 mile radius of Bath, between the ages of 25 and 60, for example

Works well for us, just one booking makes it worthwhile though, not sure how well it works for smaller value items, guess then it just becomes a numbers game.

I have used it for several small ventures.

Super simple to use and have had some good results.

As any fule kno your FB posts only go to a small proportion of your followers.

We spend a small amount of money, normally >£100 to boost certain posts. More money would be neeeded if we had more followers (12k)

This does get your post in front of a larger percentage of your interested audience.

We don't do it everytime tho, some posts are just chatty type stuff "we're still here, don't forget us"

However we're selling to a distinct demographic who are very interested in our products, we have repeat business of over 50%.

All we want is more first time buyers

I do this a lot for clients. Returns can be good but you need to think about the targeting quite carefully before you invest large amounts.

One of the beauties of it is that you can test a few different things (photos vs video, message, call to action etc.) for relatively little outlay, then build on the one that works best / combine a couple that do.

It is quite product / service dependent though. If it's something consumers can be passionate about then great - especially if it's a brand people like. If it's a necessity purchase / service then I probably wouldn't bother. Also consider the demographic you're targeting. Young people use Instagram now so if you're targeting them, go there as a priority.

We get very little repeat business and our products are not really attractive to the younger generation... hmm I wonder if its worth it.

I just assumed there was a CPC type of set up on FB.

We only have around 100 followers. We do a fair bit of e commerce but its mostly organic and CPC.

FB is perfect for you, target audience-wise. Younger types use Insta and Snap.

What do you sell?

So the target is the trade? If so, plenty of trades use Facebook in their private/social life. If you look on local groups, people will ask for recs for work done on their home eg gardeners, carpenters, plasters, plumbers, and group members will tag other members who work in the relevant trade. So if that's your target, the audience is there for you.

If not, you'll have to give us more info. Do PM if you prefer to discuss in private. I've used FB ads for about 5 years now.

Google ads can rack up fairly large spends very very quickly. I got zero return from this

Instagram/FB ads I could spend less than 100 and do very well out of it. It's all about the targeting you use and finding an audience that will engage

Ugh. I had a call from someone from Google once. They adjusted my GA account and before I knew it, I was spending more for a lower response and subsequent business. Then had to get a "professional" to fix and manage it so now we're spending monthly on top of the GA cost and not much more income. Then we got another "professional" etc. I'm not very impressed.

One of those many people who provide digital marketing services and try their best to sound like they're not getting money for old rope by charging you monthly for setting something up and making tweaks every now and then. As you can tell, I'm highly sceptical now.

At what scale does it become sensible to opt for a system to manage ads?

I know of an ecommerce business where one person's full time work, day in and day out is simply to work through all their google ppc ads to check and adjust bid strategies / prices. They have so many products now that she can't actually get through them all once per day!

I want to advise them of a way to improve that. When a business gets to that stage, what system should it be looking at?

I found this list https://www.capterra.co.uk/directory/30967/ppc/sof... which seems to include a number of tools for automating that sort of stuff and I know that a localish to me company https://www.jaywingintelligence.com/ does some clever sounding stuff too.

Might it be more cost effective for her organisation to increase her budget so that she can take on part time staff to take on some of the workload?

She could then become more of a manager and use some of the free time to analyse the resulting data.

FB and Insta advertising is pretty much the only advertising my firm does nowadays.

We try to keep the messages interesting/informative to grow the audience, then we'll have a "sales" advert with a call to action interspersed.

It might. But it is all about data and properly set up software is, surely, quicker and more accurate at dealing with data than people are. Her time could be spent fully on analyses and action planning rather than managing part time people. Likely to be more bang for the buck isn't it?

From what I understand she should be looking at automating their bid strategies. Which I believe you can do directly on GAds. Not sure about FB or Insta.

Incidentally, is anyone else finding their FB ad campaigns getting disapproved a lot recently?

What product/service? What is the nature of the ads?

You can't post things like, "Do you have depression?" as that's considered picking on people. Whereas you can/could post about how jews/muslims were spreading and needed to be stopped (depends on the colour of your tie, of course).
