We're always being told that WD40 is (funnily enough) actually a water dispersant and not a lubricant.

So what do people recommend as a lubricant that is as liquid as WD40 and can be delivered both by spray and narrow pipe attached to the nozzle (like WD40)?

Thanks

Thanks! Is it safe to use on plastic e.g. slip rings?

It always depends what it is you're trying to lubricate.

Plastic on plastic I'd probably use a silicon lubricant.

Are they all the same Dave - could you recommend one?

I think they're all pretty much the same. I hardly use WD40 these days, mostly it is silicone lube which is much cleaner. When I had new windows installed the company recommended silicone lube rather than WD40 (which I have plenty of!).

I purchased a large can of Wynne's Clear-Lube from Halfords a while back which has done me well. I think they used to do their own but I couldn't find any at the time.

Pretty much my opinion. I've been using a Halford silicone spray for plastic and rubber, mainly because it's what I have to hand.

Depends for what purpose and what you are lubricating
Plastic and rubber don't use wd40
Metal on metal better with PTFE or spray lithium grease

Wd40 does make a good cleaner /degreasers to help get things moving before covering with something more substantial

From my perspective the latest thing I want to deal with is the occasional squeak on a plastic to plastic slip ring

GT85. I use it on everything and prefer it to WD40 although not for any rational reason other than it's often on offer in Halfords bike dept.

I quite like the Silicone WD40 spray, I use it if things are a bit squeaky.

If something is stiff and needs to come off, then I use PlusGas. Hands down the best thing I've ever used.

Thanks I actually have plus gas - but that's an entirely different need/application

Given the lack of application I can only assume Maximus lube would suit you.

What would you use for a throttle cable (at the engine bay end where cable appears out of plastic tubing)?

Silicone spray, or just about any light oil.
