Hi All,

I'm looking for a signet ring as a graduation present for my son.

It will most likely be a gold oval which we will have 5 small diamonds set in a particular pattern.

We are heading into London on Wednesday to have a look around (he may decide he likes something else) and was thinking that Hatton Garden would be a good place to see a few jewellery shops close together.

He isn't bothered whether new or second hand and have a quick browse second hand seems to be a whole lot more bank for my buck leaving a bigger pot for the diamonds which we may have to get done at a later date.

Does anyone have a recommendation for Hatton Garden or anywhere else that we should be looking?

Thanks,

Dicky

I fit the demographic, but no way in hell would you catch me wearing a family crest around my pinky.

We are not grand enough for a family crest.

He already has a watch, pen and cufflinks. Doesn't want any other jewellery so going to see if he would like a signet ring.

Happy to hear other suggestions though....

That's what I keep telling Mrs Knee.

She says the same about diamond rings.

Mr Knee Jr mainly wears his Garmin and G-Shock and only occasionally his Oris. Maybe a Sinn or Damasko tool watch would interest him.

Give me a shout if you need a steer on signet rings. The main thing with these is cheap means lightweight. Lightweight means weak and a limited lifespan. If it's something you want him to keep long term then invest in quality, don't look too hard at pricing. A decent 18ct gold signet for the little finger will be over £1000 in today's market. That's for something that will last. Add a another £1000 for a bigger one for another finger. 9ct is obviously going to be cheaper but will not last his lifetime unless it's restored. Although harder (dubious term), 9ct gold wears away quicker than the more dense 18ct gold.

Thanks Eddie. I'll do that. You may recall you made his cufflinks mentioned above.

Does he enjoy cycling? Buy him a nice road bike.
Or a decent grammaphone.
But a sygnet ring? It'll end up in a draw.
What did I want at that age? Clothes to make me look good, and car to deliver me in style and some money in my back pocket to spend with my mates. Oh and hols.
Poncy jewelry and watches are things we do as we get older and have nothing else to spend money on!
Unless you are really Touker Suleyman and like branded shirts....

Are you absolutely certain that he'd like a signet ring, and if so that he'd wear a diamond set one? It's quite a niche...

Personally I'd never wear mine, but then I wouldn't wear a wedding ring either. Point being, it's a very personal choice of gift.

Have to agree - it has a very limited appeal among men that age. I know that I would definitely not wear it

Another watch, maybe engraved on the back would work better I reckon

Thanks all.

I think we will go and try something on and see if he likes it.

He's been working while at Uni so has a gramaphone-2 decks and a mixing desk actually and a bike that is worth about the same as my car.

He seems a bit ho-hum about another watch.

Maybe some cash to blow on whatever he wants.

Or avoid the signet ring per se and go for something different; perhaps a platinum ( or if he's an engineer, titanium wink) band, perhaps with a pattern, perhaps with diamonds after all. Personally I would have thought that the signet ring, if worn at all by young 'uns these days, would be mainly seen in young conservative and/or landed gentry circles. Which, if you & he fit that demographic, is absolutely fine, but otherwise unusual.

End of the day though it's whatever he wants and you're prepared to buy for him and which makes you both happy!

Despite not being able to get the Del Boy image out of my head we did do a bit of window shopping today and he seems keen. There are some more modest designs out the than the full sovereign Del is modelling in the picture.

No decision made yet and I need t drop Eddie a line as well to get a steer on what to look out for.

Thanks Firestick.

That's the place we went to. Great service and no pressure. They had plenty of sizes and designs for him to try on and gave him lots to think about
