Thought I'd share my recent bizarre experience of having my GT3 insured with Admiral.

I added my recently-acquired GT3 to my existing multi-car policy, just for convenience, with the intention of moving it to a standalone policy on renewal in a few months. Everything went ok until I queried the statement on the policy doc stating that the car has no "modifications". Their definition of mods includes factory fitted optional equipment. I was going through the list of (many) options that my car has and the insurer's phone rep was happy with all of them (including roll cage) until we came to the light design package. When I explained what this was, the rep put me on hold to see how they characterise it for rating purposes. When she came back on the line, she said, "sorry we can't insure the car because it has a roll cage, which means it will be driven fast" - I kid you not.

Though this was a ridiculous position for them to adopt (not least because she had told me that roll cage was simply classed as an 'interior change'), I didn't waste time arguing because it was clear that they were clueless about the nature of the car and I wouldn't want to have to make any claim later, which would be bound to be met with incomprehension etc. and a massive headache.

I've gone with Zurich instead.

Just wanted to warn any others who have assumed that Admiral cover GT3s with CS package.

Admiral don’t cover all the portion extras anyway...they only pay out on the value of a basic car. Someone on here had a nightmare with them over a windscreen replacement recently.

Good miss....don’t think the cost saving of insuring with Admiral is reflective of the policy terms personally........

I had exactly the same experience with a 991 GT3. Admiral's underwriters refused to cover the car with the CS package; they have a flat refusal to cover anything with a cage, factory fitted or not, and you can't really avoid telling them about it given that you have to explicitly list every factory option.

I used NFU in the end. Great service and no problems with the cage, although only suitable if you're willing to self insure or look elsewhere for track cover.

Definitely a relief to have gone with a different insurer. You're so right about the premium being a false saving!

FWIW, I think that they do cover the value of the car with extras, but only if declared and specified in the policy schedule. Bit of a trap for the unwary tho', and when you run through the extras, they have to be translated into Admiral classifications, eg "interior changes"

Their stance is odd because they have a covered modification category for roll cage and, if the car were to be driven on track and damaged, the damage would be excluded in any event. Go figure!

The question is whether a GT3 Clubsport is a standard spec or whether it is optional equipment. "Anything which changes the manufacturer's standard specification" seems to be the definition I can see. Does 'clubsport' change the manufacturer's standard spec of GT3. Or is GT3 Clubsport the standard specification of GT3 clubsport? biggrin

Its a strange technicality within insurance and yet wouldn't affect a claim. You also wouldn't be paid out for any of the extras you listed.

So the answer is not bother, but you are doing the right thing by going to an insurer that understands the car better.

I have read this with interest and will look for quotes elsewhere come renewal. They are probably more geared up for more normal cars TBH
The roll cage thing I understand. They have a history of what mods lead to claims and it will be a feature that underwriters see involved in more claims
It won't be people in GT3s but the sorts of cars like Civics and Clios that you see at trackdays with cages in

Anyone fool enough to go with Admiral for whatever reason should send them a copy of the vehicles invoice listing all costed options then get them to confirm by e mail return that they are happy with them and the car is fully covered including costed options.

As others have said they do not insure cars with cages.

Furthermore you need confirmation that you can use an OPC for all repairs including glass replacement at no penalty to yourself.

I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole even to insure a lawnmower never mind a decent car.

NFU also gets my vote all day long. Great service and good value too.

Interesting - NFU was actually my first port of call, but the motor insurance phone rep confessed that she had never heard of an "agreed value" policy (!), not knowing what such a thing was, and said she would have to call me back the next day about a premium once she had spoken to someone about whether I could be offered a NCB (as the NCB on my turbo went with that car when I sold it in 2016). Time was short as I was about to go on holiday and needed to have some cover lined up so that I could collect the car on the day of my return - hence, my next call was to Admiral.

So, maybe it depends which NFU office you speak to, but I was unimpressed by them.

Admiral have actually been fine with my other cars, albeit not Porsches. e.g. they had no problem with the X5 going to BMW for repairs when it was damaged. But I think that the GT3 is just a bit too exotic for their tastes.

Not sure why you approach a run of the mill insurer for a non run of the mill car.

Admiral were fine when I was doing their accelerated 10 month NCB, on standard cars, but for anything custom / special / rare / expensive you are better going to a proper insurer who understand the risks and whose underwriters can cater for things like roll cages etc.

Strange indeed.

I added my 996 GT3 to my multicar policy until renewal next year as it was only £250 for the remaining 10 months cover.
I declared all mods. A comfort with cage etc and they’re fine with it.
You’re right though they don’t cover the mods in the event of a claim.
If a car got stolen from me I’d hope it didn’t show up anyway. I doubt I’d want it back. They’d still have to pay market value for a comfort regardless of ignoring the cost of my mods.

I’ll be insuring it properly next year as I want decent cover and track cover.

I just renewed all 3 of our cars with LV= Direct on their multi product.
It's a really good level of cover, you use their recommended garage or pay £200 extra to use any garage
Good balance there as the quote was dirt cheap & they have a good reputation.
In fairness I'd probably be happy using their recommended garage for the Evoque & Smart car.

Cars are:
R8 (9 years NCB), Evoque (5 years NCB) & Smart car (1 year NCB) all £1170 and a further £70 cash back via Quidco. Think that's pretty good

Zurich seems very good, so far. I'll look into Mannings too on renewal.
Lockton (through PCGB) also know their stuff, but required a mileage warranty.

Errr ‘roll bars?’ Definitely the same as a roll cage?

I'd be wanting to check that, as that's definitely not the same thing and they may revoke cover if you need to claim.

There will be statistical evidence that people who have cars with roll cages have more accidents and therefore they refuse to cover them.
