The little plastic pegs that clip into the rubber grommets holding on the front engine cover have snapped off. Three of them are missing, indicated in yellow on the attached picture. Some previous ham fisted idiot.

Does anybody have any bright ideas how to repair these. I have toyed with small screws with little covers covering screw heads. I could drill a small hole in the corresponding cover to join together. Or just leave alone ?

Mods please move to wherever suitable. I couldn’t decide which area to post in

Before drilling the cover I would try to attach some replacement legs using something like araldite.
Finding or making some replacement pegs may be the hard part though.

I am a bit concerned using araldite and makeshift replacement pegs due to heat and vibration there. Don’t want anything pinging off as suchb

It’s surprising how long Merc keep parts. I was able to get a couple of obscure trim parts for my 12 year old SL that were in stock at a dealer last week.

Could save a lot of messing about.

It’s part of the complete cover so not a small part. Complete cover is quite a lot £200 or so

The issue with araldite or similar is that it never really "grips" the original plastic and isn't likely to stay in place.

How are you with fabricating stuff?

What does the underside look like for rebuilding the pegs?

If it were mine, I would get a self-tapper into the original structure for some strength, then build up round it with body filler or superglue & plastic powder then get the shape with a dremmel & that should last.

Either that or take it somewhere that does plastic welding.

I don’t have the broken pegs to re weld I’m afraid. If I’m going to use a self tapper then I would just self tap into the adjoining piece of cover then it would be really secure and you would only see a screw head on the cover

You don't need the original pegs, as you can re-make them from the filler/superglue & powder.

Doing it the way I am suggesting you won't even see that as all work can be done from underneath.

You mean self tap into what’s left of original peg then build up around that ? That’s a good suggestion. Thanks I think I will try that first

^^^^ Exactly that.

Self tapper into what is left to give you something to build onto then build up filler/superglue & plastic powder & dremmel into a new peg.

Don't get me wrong it won't be a quick job, but should be possible.

I'll second that but also suggest

Chemical metal, like body filler but stronger.
GRP Paste, Plastic Padding do one, has glass fibre content for strength.

I will agree that it is stronger than filler, but have you ever tried my other option superglue & plastic powder?

It is amazing used like that & is cheap as chips, rock hard and real easy to shape with a dremmel.

Nope but I'll give it a try.

It is SERIOUSLY good used like this.

Drop superglue where you want to build up, pour on plastic powder, repeat until you have built up enough to work with & then use dremmel etc to shape what you want.

I have done several repairs/mods to plastic items like this & it is ridiculously strong.

I started with the kits that you can buy but you don't get much powder & it works out fairly expensive to do more than a little repair.

Now I do it 1 of 2 ways using High Viscosity Superglue (normal works virtually as well) and either plastic "filings" or buy a bag of plastic powder.

The way it works is the long molecule strings in the glue "fill in" the gaps between the plastic & the powder & all hold onto each other which makes it VERY strong.

It can also be used in the same manner with aluminium filings/powder & superglue on metal.

So superglue and black plastic powder dropped and poured around a self tapper. Shaped with a dremel?

Where do you get plastic powder from ? E bay / amazon

Ebay, just a couple of £ for a few 100g bag or get out a grinder/dremmel & a bit of scrap plastic & catch the bits, works just as well.

Something like this is fine.

It is meant to have heated metal dropped into it to "plastic powder coat" it, but for using it like I suggest it is really just a filler for the glue strings to hold onto/wrap round to increase the strength of the bond.
