Hello people!

Looking to buy a convertible e class facelift. I have driven diesel before and I know they have a lot of torque etc but There is nothing exciting about a diesel, so I’m considering petrol, am I mad?

Has anyone driven a 2.0 petrol of these?
Is 350 petrol the minimum I should go for?

I do motorway miles but not to live or for work, only when I’m travelling, I’m a city driver in general.

Really need your opinions on petrol vs diesel people, please help!

I’ve had a 2010 E350 Diesel Cabrio and now have a 2012 E500 V8 Petrol Cabrio.

I think the 2 litre petrol might feel a bit underpowered. The 2 litre diesel feels a bit gruff - I have that engine in another Merc,

Aim for a E400 petrol I reckon.

I averaged 36 mpg in the E350 over the time I owned it, currently averaging 26 mpg in the 500. The 400 should average 30 odd mpg.

Insurance on the e400 isn’t as bad as I thought!

If you are going to consider the E400 do a bit of research about the engines up to and around 2014 just for your peace of mind. They do have some issues with timing chains or similar.

I'd say the 400 is the minimum to be honest but as above some of these have had timing chain issues so do your checks.

Research how?
Should I only consider 2015 upwards?

If you have a look over on the MBUK forum and do a search there are threads that will give you information re the issues.

Also just google Mercedes E400 engine issues and you should get info there as well.
