Nessie May be a Giant Eel

The British record rod caught eel weighed 11lb 2oz and has stood for over forty years.
This year the Environment Agency caught an eel from the Thames in a survey which might have challenged that record - they didn't release the weight, but it was 139cm long and weight/length charts would suggest a weight of 12lb10oz.
I think the idea that there are Loch Ness monster sized eels in Ness is insanely fanciful.

As a teen I remember looking over a bridge in West Wales where I grew up and seeing an enormous eel swimming up stream from under the bridge. It would have been in about 12 inches of water and was swimming how I imagine a snake to swim... In a kind of writhing S shape. I spoke to a few anglers about what I'd seen and described it as being about 1.5 metres long and as thick as my wrist at the time. The anglers I spoke to were not surprised by the size and said the river is home to lots of huge eels. So it surprises me to hear the biggest ever caught was just 139cm.
Another strange point about the story was the colour of what I saw, a kind of browny, sandy colour. Where's the anglers were only aware of jet black eels in the river. I've always wondered what it was exactly.

Sadly, in my considerable experience of working in and visiting for tourism, the Scots at best seems to display apathy toward, well pretty much anyone who isn't an American in check trousers with a fat wallet!
We went at Easter to go MTB'ing spoke to some guys from the National MTB team / commission at Glentress, who were less than helpful in suggesting any particular trails to look at on our first visit to Glentress. Spoke to the shop guys who said that would be because we are not "local" and they want to keep it for the locals.
Great! Glad we travelled 400 miles up there.
Coupled to apathetic staff at the big posh gold hotel down the road, a pool closed due to "unplanned maintenance" and surly slow service pretty much everywhere we went, it was a trip we're not too keen to repeat!!
I am sure they are not all like that but some of them don't help 'emselves!

The larger of these (huge but well under the record) eels was 120cm - still pretty big!

I don’t get people who fish for eels on purpose. They’re revolting, they cover everything in slime. They have the redeeming feature of being good eating, but nobody keeps them, least of all those who catch them on purpose (and indeed it’s now illegal to do so)
