The Dutch said:
We want a spliff
And then you must cut down the largest tree in the forest with........a herring
And then spend all day with some students talking about how there would be world peace if everyone just sat down at the UN and had a spliff together.
It was obvious (even before the French "Non"
that the Dutch would resoundedly reject this.
For many years The Netherlands has been a major financial contributer to Europe but has maintained it's liberalistic attitude eg to drugs, prostitution etc. The public now realise that this liberalism will be compromised by handing yet more power to Brussels.
Add to this the fact that the Gilder was wrongly rated at the time of the Euro monetary switchover (which caused major inflation- ergo resentment).
Most of all though, there's an understandable wish to curtail the proposed expansion of Europe to include Turkey etc.
Holland has had more of a problem with Muslim insurgency than most western European countries (Spain aside) so far...

The Spectator's political editor was very entertaining on the Beeb this morning - he ripped into the Mirror's bloke (even though the man from the Mirror agreed the constitution is dead in the water), blamed the Beeb as part of the pro EU media and pointed out that the whole thing is being promoted by a bunch of Socialist gravy train riders. Especially as Kinnock was anti-EU until he got a job there
Apparently (and I didn't know this) the constitution has been agreed by 9 countries
(with 49% of the EU population) Does anyone know which ones? Could it be the newer ones with most to gain from a USE???

Agreed by 9 countries, 8 of which have not asked their populace....only Spain held a referendum (yes by a gnats whisker without giving them ANY info on the constitution!)...
German parties couldn't even answer the question as to how many stars were on the EU flag (12) and still voted it in (against popular opinion I may add. I'd reckon 75% are against further integration/EU burocracy etc in Germany and would thus vote NEIN!)!!!!
is this another nail in the coffin for the EU?
listening to that idiot on newsnight last night, well,'er only two countries have voted no, so not to worry, we will discuss the constitution and implement it after the euro conference, bla, bla...what planet are these people on? i know he is basically a euro civil servant commisar bod but i thought the idea of a referendum was to ask the people, do you agree or do you not agree? on major issues....clearly i am mistaken. it is viewed by the euro bods as a rubber stamp, as a no vote, i beg to differ from your proposition, will be ignored.
do "we" really want to be part of this outfit? what is the EU really for? a bit of multi choice here:
A. lavish gravey train for euro civil service bods.
or
B. gigantic money go round where fiscally larger countries pay to improve the infrastructure of fiscally smaller countries (while also including A above).
or
C. a method of subsidising industries for political ends while also meeting the demands of B above.
or
D. a means to form a federal state, with common laws and currency from a group of largely dissimilar countries, administered for the benefit of the administrators, without initial consultation from the populas, while meeting the criteria of A, B and C above.
or
E. to foster collaboration of a group of countries in a basic geographic grouping with the aim of free trading and free passage of goods and services to the benefit of all.
i wonder what was/is the real point of the EU?

Does it seem likely that the group of countries that were repressed by the USSR for most of the last half century have any urge to sign up to a USE?? Quite a few of them were prepared to be killed in the name of national freedom. They have a rather keener sense of the value of self determination than the rest of us.
The new entrants are the group the Americans refer to as "New Europe" precisely because they aren't looking to create an integrated, protectionist, limp wristed socialist economic mess, like Old Europe is seeking to do. The new entrants are our natural allies in Europe. They want limited transfer of national authority to the centre, but the economic benefit of a large free market. They look to the USA as much as they do to us, France or Germany.
You might remeber that when France decided it would speak "for Europe" in the run up to the Iraq War that it was the new entrant nations who told them to piss off. Chirac then described them as a bunch of children who would do well to shut up. Bit of a shock to his poor gallic system to have these upstarts voice an opinion.
