Hoping the PH collective can help here.

I'm hoping to chase a wiring fault on a Griffith that's in ..

fuse 11 blows ..

I've put a test light across it and powered things up in turn in the car and it seems to glow very bright (ie the switch I press is going to earth through the fuse hence it blowing) when I press the middle of the three lighting buttons. However the dash has previously been apart and I'm not convinced the switches are in the correct places, or with the correct wiring attached to them eg what should be the fog light isn't a latching switch it's a momentary switch so obviously not correct.

I *think* the switch which blows fuse 11 is the sidelight switch, though I can't prove it without tracing it through.

In the meantime I would really love a picture of the rear of a griffith dash (it's a later dash with the silver bezel dials) , hopefully showing as many of the wire colours as possible so I can at least make a stab at the correct wires being roughly in the right switch areas.

Google images isn't really coming up with anything detailed enough.

If anyone has some close up shots of the rear of the switches, or a labelled diagram from doing a dash-out refurb or similar I would love to see it

any help appreciated smile

What size wattage bulb is in the test lamp you're using?

My dash is out at present so just photographed the back. Mine is a ‘94 with black ETB dials but switches and wire colours should be the same? I’ve shown the dash face as well so you can see which wires connect at the back. The light switch order on mine looking at dash face is from left to right fog/head/side. Hope these help, if you need any more let me know....

My Dash is also out at present.
It is a 92 pre car so probably less relevant than the pictures already posted. However, if you would like pictures then send me a pm.

Many thanks one and all that's exactly the pictures I required, well done everyone thank you!

Also thanks to Adrian Venn who emailed me a wiring diagram, top fella.

To Penelope Stopit ^^ it's a 5watt bulb and glows as bright as if fed by 12v and the earth taken direct to earth .. but maybe I should go up on the power of the test bulb and see what circuit starts to glow ? I'm guessing that if the test bulb is earthing through all the sidelights (if it is indeed the sidelight switch that's running through that fuse 11) then a 5 watt test bulb is going to be pretty bright anyway when in place of the fuse ?

You're on the case, 21 watts will do the job, bright on short circuit

Just in case it helps...it appears that the sidelight switch is actually two switches in one. I had a failure on mine where the side were not working but the headlights were. I.e. it was supplying power to the headlight switch, which is interlocked with the sidelight switch, but was not supplying power to the sidelights.

N.B. I've not looked into this on the wiring diagram nor do I understand why they might do that (rather than just use the side light feed to feed the headlights).

Side light switch feeds the sidelights, and then via their own switches the headlights and dash lights switches

I gave myself a fright earlier .. investigating another issue behind the dash I reached through the radio aperture and caught a glimpse of a flash of light from the passenger footwell. Any unwanted flash of light strikes fear into the heart of any mechanic especially one investigating electrical issues!

Anyway, it was my test bulb lighting up (phew) .. and as I was disturbing the wiring behind the dash it was flashing on and off as I moved my hand .. a bare spade connector on a red wire was catching the back of the metal dash ..

just got to find where that goes now!

Car is on the dyno at the moment so i've made the wire safe so I can get on with the job it's actually in for (emerald ecu fit) , then turn my attention again to the wires later.

cheers all.
