Hi everyone
I'm considering a 997 for pure driving fun- I won't use it to commute or to go away with family in, it will be for shorter trips including just going out for a drive to enjoy the car. Use with be predominantly in the summer, budget isn't really an issue aside from I don't want to lose loads in depreciation- I don't mind normal high running costs/expenses. We have an excellent local Porsche specialist who will look after the car. I'm fully aware of issues with IMS/bore scoring on the earlier cars.
What model would people buy? I was leaning towards a C2S with a manual box but would appreciate opinions/experience.

I think a C2 or C2S perfect. Something like the car above at £15k a bargain.

That could be a PEC car - I’d check first.

If budget not an issue, then it's a GT3RS

997.2 C2S.
More reliable engine and better interior

Sorry, should have said I don’t want a GT3/track focused model, we have speed humps on our street that the front end wouldn’t like.

Can’t go wrong really but just to be different, a C4S. Wider track, little weight over the front doesn’t hurt it, power is to the rear until you lose traction. Daily’d mine for 76,000 miles and still makes me smile, every single time.

997.2 GTS....slightly more powerful engine than the C2S which because of the Powerkit that is fitted to it as standard gives you a better top end. Ride is slightly firmer than the standard Carrera/S and worlds really nicely on your country lanes/B roads. Slightly upgraded interior with Alcantara (as long as someone didn’t delete it when specking it) and is just a great car to driive. Manual is the one to get and will hold it’s value better because much fewer made...that is the same for any 997 now Manual is the one people want. I am biased because I have one but I really love it and have kept it despite having “upgraded” to a GT3. Manual 2wd 997.2 GTS is probably the best drivers 997 apart from a GT3. Turbo’s are a bit marmite....lots of people love them but lots of people find them a bit dull/too capable...I think mostly because once they’ve got over the initial “bloody hell this is fast” excitement they realise the car is a bit too fast for UK roads. For a car to feel exciting you need to be driving it somewhere near it’s performance potential.

997.2 C2S manual seems like a great shout. I was looking for the same car a couple of years ago, but struggled to find the right one with owners quite rightly seeming to keep hold of them. I moved my search onto the 991.1, but with concerns over the shift quality of its gearbox and the early versions of EPS ended up ordering a new 991.2. To be fair it’s been great, but the 997.2 would have cost far less per mile so far and provided me with what I was looking for.

I guess I’m saying is that I’d support the 997.2 C2S option you’re considering. As a weekend car, another good shout would be a 993. More outlay, but also a car that’s going to remain sought after if you decide to move on to something else.

I'm not sure the C2S is really there. Felt a bit Golf-like to me.

What about a really nice, well maintained manual 996 turbo(no IMS or bore-scoring), I've had a couple over the years as well as 997's, both superb cars.
Good luck.

I’m inclined to agree with Carcrazypop and Bertbert that a 997 may be just a little dull as a weekend car. Having had a 964, two 996s and a 997, the latter is a bit ‘comfortable’ to be exciting (see review in my Garage). To my mind, it’s really a GT, not a sports car. A 996 Turbo might be more fun.

If you do go for a 997, I’d certainly avoid the PDK Auto though and go for the manual.

I’d agree that a 997 C2S is a little dull,...I see yours was a Gen 1 with Tiptronic ? That’s not a car I would want to own.

Kind of why I recommended the GTS....just drives that bit better, has the engine that revs out nicely and works so well with the manual box. I just don’t think I’d recommend a GT3 or an RS as a first 911....especially the latter. Awesome cars but not for everyone.

I agree, the GTS 997 is an engaging car, I regret selling mine. Needs perfect history and opc used warranty.
