Gassing Station Paging Change?

Was thinking last night (trying to apply a bit of lateral thinking to some of the speed issues I've had of late) and wondered what people thought of generating the page of topics grouped by day(s) rather than the arbitary 20 topics at a time?
e.g. Pie & Piston would show all today's topics on the current page, yesterday's on page 2, the day before's on page 3 etc.
Less busy forums would have pages that would show 3 days at a time etc.
What do you reckon?

Sounds interesting - could get pretty long page lengths though for the busy forums like this one?
Is it too difficult to let individuals be able to select their page sorting preferences? Like 20/page 50/page, todays posts etc?

Would make sense... Just a thought, could the performance hit be generated by the split of GG & the Pie & Piston?
A lot of people now use the "whats new" view grouped by forum rather than hanging around in an individual forum. Would that be throwing a lot more queries at the servers?

It shouldn't, should be just the same number (i.e. one!).
If I understood Ted correctly, the strain is placed on the servers because of the overhead of splitting results across pages (and the results will change minute by minute so the cache won't be much use).
Technically, grabbing a slice of topics within a date range is very efficient. Grabbing 20 topics from all topics isn't very efficient.
However, I've just tried it out and it feels good actually. The arbitary 20 topics usually means that I look at the current page and not much else. Knowing that a page is 'today' and the previous page is 'yesterday' is more intuitive and engaging

great idea. The volume of new topics in GG and P&P is such that topics rapidly drop down to page 3 or 4 and I think a lot of them never get seen. I've often asked a quick question and then found 30 mins later it's on page 5 with no replies - and not much chance of getting one.PetrolTed said:

Partly - we're seeing more traffic in general and some of my queries were 'sub-optimal'
Ah, it's probably worth paying attention to the "what's new" queries then to make sure they're not "sub-optimal"
as a lot of people probably don't browse by forum, but by "what's new" If that's the case, the paging change might not yield as much of a benefit.
Can you tell which are your most used queries?

I just use the "what's new" with my favourites selected. P&P GG SP&L Porsche & Boxster.
Much easier to keep up to date with what's of interest, but I would imagine it throws a more complex query at the servers.

I agree with the above. A thread can become topical again months after it was started. Instead of contributing to an existing thread , won't these proposed changes encourage people to start anew ?
Don't think it will really. It will allow a larger number of topics on each page and therefore fewer will be lost over the page as happens currently.
