I went with my daughter yesterday to buy a new VW TRoc. On the face of it we got a reasonable deal with money off the retail price of the new car and a good PX price on hers (a couple of hundered over Cap clean price ). She is buying on a PCP. She placed a £200 deposit on the car but no delivery time on the new build.
Out of interest she put the same model into Carwow, the same dealer we had dealt with came back with a price £3600 less than the price of the car quoted in the showroom.
A number of other dealers were around £3k less.

She thinks if something looks too good to be true it probably is. However I’m minded to go into the showroom and get them to explain where the difference is. Admittedly the carwow price didn’t consider and PX price but with a difference of £3600 we could afford to just lose the £200 deposit and take a big hit on PX and still be well in profit.

Accepting we should have done the carwow thing before walking into the showroom has anyone any experience of this and is it likely that such big differences can happen

Yep. There is huge margin on many new cars being given away as dealers are desperate to sell.

You should go back and ask them to match. You may lose out something on your px - webuyanycar will give you a reasonable idea what it is worth. You may be better selling to them if dealer tries to make money back by lowballing you on it.

The dealer is going to maximise their profits where they can so if they can sell you a new car at a higher price than you get through Carwow they will.

It's safe to say you and your daughter were happy with the deal they offered in the showroom at the time because you paid the deposit.

I'd say as above go in and ask them.if they will change the deal, armed with the Carwow details, if they won't cancel it losing your £200 potentially and reorder on Carwow.

Bear in mind there may be different pricing structures depending on how the car is to be financed, or when the car has to be registered by.

Rarely is it as black and white as I placed an order and it costs £x, CarWow are offering it for £y.

On wife's Tiguan local dealer did a PCP quote on his iPad that was about £100/mth dearer than VW's website and with very much a "that's it" attitude. I asked for a copy of it and he refused so we left.

Using CarWow the same dealer, and our next nearest dealer, part of the same group, both quoted near as dammit as low as the other, more distant, dealers did - around £25K on a £30K car. I also got a price off DriveTheDeal and they were almost a grand cheaper, but they called and said they wouldn't discuss it unless I agreed to wait the factory lead time. We needed the car quickly and when I told the guy this he was very abrupt.

I also used a Tiguan forum to benchmark the deal against what others were getting around the country.

Avoiding our nearest dealer I played the next nearest off against the distant dealers and during this they let slip they were a DriveTheDeal 'preferred' dealer, so I switched to using the DtD price as my reference. Did the final negotiation face-to-face and we got to within a few hundred £ of the DtD price, and we got the car in 8 days in the exact colour and spec we wanted (availability was getting iffy as it was getting towards the end of the mk1 Tiguan).

After all that, I still wonder how great the deal was - I asked for a tank of fuel, not insignificant on Tiguan, and he agreed readily. I've bought a Golf where they'd only put 10 litres in it and an Ateca recently where the fuel light came on as we drove away.

No, not too good to be true. We bought a VW Touran through carwow in 2017 and it was a great experience.

We did it the other way round, though. Quote from Carwow from our local dealer,£7200 off list price. We went into the dealer to sort out a purchase to find that the carwow salesman is based at the dealer but only does the carwow deals. He was out that day and all the other salesmen could do was say "that's a good deal, we can't get anywhere near that"!

We sorted it all though carwow by email and phone, the only difference was that the car was delivered to our house by the carwow salesman with somebody else from the dealer in another car to take him back again and no part-ex. There was no extra mileage on the car and it was registered at the local dealership.

Communications were all great, part ex down to webuyanycar and a hassle free process. I guess if everybody starts using it the discounts will come down so make the most of it!

Had similar experiences in the past for new Golf and previous Land Rover

Bought cars from Carwow and Drivethedeal and have never managed to get my local dealers to even get close to their prices - only ever had great experiences with both firms and happy to use them for our next car

Just looked on drivethedeal and they are offering over £5k off a Tiguan...

Unfortunately they can’t even blame that. I got them to strip them out of the deal in the showroom but yes it amounted to £1k ish

With new cars you can use Broadspeed to get a good idea of the general target prices. With the T Roc it's about 3,500 on average. Some models over 4k off. If you don't get this sort of deal you will take a real bath come trade in time. There will be many dealers who will want your business. I'd have no qualms about travelling to get what I wanted. Good luck

Theyre happy enough to make £1000 profit.....but will happily make £4500 instead if they can.

If shes signed up for any kind of credit she will have a cooling off period i imagine.

Tell her to cancel and go carwow if they dont price match....even then they will be making extra as there will be no carwow comission to pay.

I would imagine it's more likely, they'd like to make £1,500 on a retail sale.

But if they shift xxx units they get a bonus large enough to cover losing £1,000 per car, and Carwow et al allow them to shift these volumes.

I bought an Up GTi from a dealer in Kent via drivethedeal. My local (Scottish) dealer couldn't get close to the deal and the purchase process was easy from start to finish.

VW actually increased the list price and removed the deposit support during the time I was waiting, but they still honoured my original deal. Overall I couldn't have been happier and would recommend them to anyone.

Only vaugly related but this is how much fuel my £108k Exige 430 Cup was delivered with.

Totally off topic, but is that how much an Exige is? I must admit I had no idea, but if you had asked me to guess I would have said around £60k.
