When the people running the ‘system’ are totally crap, what do you expect?

More meaningless crony awards.

Why don't we all get a gong for doing our job?

Labour whining about it is hypocrisy in action.

But giving cretins like Robbins a knighthood just diminishes the award for those who deservedly got one.

As for the two muppets advising May... Rewards for failure.

Our "leaders" have totally lost the plot and are hugely out of touch. I can see huge political reform happening in my lifetime. Either the idiots in both houses will realise they need to reform from within, or they're going to get their arses handed to them via "populist" organisations/parties/activists...

Been happening gradually for years. It won't end well.

At least the Test Match Special leg pull of referring to Boycott as "Sir Geoffrey" will now be accurate.

No doubt some will think Oily Robbins more deserving, personally I don't.

Harold Wilson made his secretary a dame. OK, by then the honours system was accepted as dishonourable so who gave a damn, but she suddenly became politically active. Not only that but she provided the printed media with lots of nonsensical headlines.

But why his secretary? What could possibly have motivated him to honour her?

I think that there was more to it than just giving his secretary an honour. It was alleged that his secretary actually wrote the list of honours and that was why it included so many people who were "neither close to Wilson nor to the Labour Party".

I did have to laugh at the R4 presenter calling Geoff Boycott this morning to ask about his knighthood, they had a pleasant few minutes talking about his cricket life and award, then she ambushed him with "do you think it's right that you got a knighthood when you have a conviction for domestic violence" and got shut down by Boycott in his usual gruff manner hehe

Geoffrey Boycott? I wouldn't have given him a honour, in fact I wouldn't have employed him.

A nasty piece of work.

Of course. He’s a Yorkshireman. What else could he be?

My father was head of a government department and the “reward” on leaving was an OBE. He turned it down saying he was paid to do the job and that was his reward. Every head of said department before and after accepted the honour.

Clearly your father was a man of rare integrity.

May's list is as much a disgrace as her premiership was. Just a rewards list for her staff who were well paid to do their jobs. Many of those getting gongs didn't even do the jobs for very long - hardly a lifetime of service.

A few years ago I recommended someone for recognition. He is a man who has given a lifetime (over fifty years) of altruistic selfless voluntary service to his community - local councillor, led youth and community groups, charity organiser, NHS and School Governor, and chair, the list literally goes on an on.

He's a truly humble man and a genuine inspiration. He's never sought any kind of recognition or reward.

He got nothing.

At that point I concluded the whole process was completely rotten.

When I was in my youth, a friend of mine's girlfriend's father (with me?) was a 'Yes Minster' type of civil servant. When the Cuban missile crisis started, he stayed at work for days. They sent a big, black car to pick him up. He was a really pleasant chap.

He refused to call anyone by their honourific when in his house. That's everyone, regardless of who or what. For the wedding of his eldest, some guests refused to return to the house for the breakfast as the place names would be just that. I never spoke to him about it but his daughter reckoned that he knew that most were bought by money or nasty behaviour so ignored them.
