The last part of the sentence to be said in a gravelly east-end style.

As you all know, the OE INAs come in packs of 8. Rudimentary maths tells me to buy 3 packs and split the costs with someone else.

Is that person going to read this post in time?

PS yes hello everyone - see you all at Goodwood in a months time biggrin

Funny you should say that. A while back I asked the same on 911UK, when the thread disappeared I asked again & that too disappeared. Since a fellow 911 Uk’er has filled in a few blanks!

I too hope all is well, you were always very helpful on the forum smile

Cheers

Thanks both. I miss you guys too......

acme - I'm afraid I told the Boss where to go when he asked me to do something shifty, and that was that hehe I've never seen so many toys thrown at me out of the pram.

I'm good - I just waste my life working in High Finance now instead of wasting it on internet forums tongue out

OC good to hear you are alive and well. Any ideas what happened to 'GT4' from the 911uk forum?

Hey Zingers

um... eek... some of the Porsche-specific forum-names get mixed up in ma heed.... GT4...sorry I'll think about it. I don't have access to 911uk anymore to remind myself.

Tappets - just to ramble on a bit - as I have been away working I haven't been using any car very much, so on the 993 a very slight occasional ticking noise has developed into a bit of a klack, so I took the exhausts off (again) and the cam cover that I replaced the seal for many years ago.

Using internet+Clinchy's advice on tappet/rocker removal, I've pulled 2 out of 3 of the lower ones on the noisy-side, and one had bits of rubber ring (see below - very brittle but remaining on the tappet/rocker seat as usual, but the middle one had no sign of the rubber ring anywhere and fell out when I pulled the rocker.- I hope that one was making the noise smile

This was the tappet that was still in the rocker

NB the damage to the tappet was done when I pulled it out - it was perfect before that smile but the rubber ring fell apart on exit.

But the new tappets have not yet arrived, so it is not yet back together.

I've forgotten how much I enjoy working on the 993 - it's so well made and 'easy' to dismantle. But one word of advice if you want to tackle lower cam-covers - buy an Irwin 'bolt-grip' set - the 10mm piece makes an impossible job easy, and I undid the 11 other-side cam-cover untouched-for-23-years bolts in less than 30 minutes.

Second bit of advice - non-stress etc bolts - replace with stainless-steel, especially any exhaust bolts. Oh they just whizzed apart - a joy!
I used SS bolts last time on the cam-cover as well, and the heads are in perfect condition still, though you could argue it's only been 6 or so years since I did it.

I know you are all dying to know how this turned out.

I have replaced all six lower hydraulic tappets - easy job. If you have a few essential tools.

Five of the six originals were in 'perfect' condition - i.e. still bouncy/free-moving/rotating-head, and the 'rubber' ring only failed on each when I pulled each tappet from each rocker.

The tappet where the 'rubber' ring had failed, all by itself, was middle LHS if anyone stores-up such statistics.

Pre start-up, I pulled the DME-relay and spun the starter-motor for a while, to get the oil into where it should.

And then add fuel..... and the tapping noise is gone. cool
