Hi All,

I bought a new Dell Inspiron 7380 yesterday for my daughter.

It was downloading MS Office this evening (taking hours) and the battery ran out I think.

Anyway, it has been on charge for a couple of hours and still dead.

I don't have a clue about these things but my thought is a faulty charger or faulty computer. Could it be anything else to do with the download?

I'm planning to take it back to John Lewis tomorrow but is there something I should try first?

Cheers,

Dicky

Remove the battery, hold the power button for 10-15s then let go. (Without the power lead in)

Connect power and Push power button and see if that powers it up.(without battery).

If that works shutdowns/reinsert battery and power up. It’s worked for me on previous laptops.

Thanks Heartworm for your reply.

As it is brand new I think I'll stick with Plan A and take it back.

Yeah take it back; i had a brand new Inspirion around 2 years ago (bought from the outlet) and it died almost immediately after setting up; it was a motherboard issue. A tech came out to repair it and it worked for 24 hours again before the same thing happened; I sent it back and got a refund.

The first time in about 5 machines that I've had an issue with something from Dell's Outlet; although it was the first Inspirion I had, my others were XPS and Latitudes which never gave an issue.

You're going to take it back to the seller for the possible Heartworm fix to be carried out by the seller?

I'd try the above - costs nothing, non-invasive and have had that sort of procedure sort a couple of machines (doesn't mean there's anything fundamentally wrong with the machine necessarily).

Does it have a USB-C power adaptor? If so, you may be right that it's that at fault. They are hopeless IME. 3x different OEM brands have failed on me before. I now use an Anker that has a separate USB-C cable. The versatility of the connector is great but they aren't sturdy in the slightest.

Try what has been said above. My 16 year old self serving you in PC World customer services would be laughing at your inability to check, bonus points if you came in kicking and screaming.

I am computer illiterate but luckily have a PhD in plugging things in.

Left it on the charger overnight and got a blue BitLocker (whatever that is) screen this morning.

I now have a log in screen but my daughter has forgotten the password and unfortunately took her finger to school so can't use the scanner.

Hopefully back on track now.

Too late for the op, but this worked for me when my Dell ‘died’ after a few months. That was ages ago & it’s been great since. A common problem ..
