I am trying to kill the engine on a astra j 1.7 cdti so I can perform a compression test. And for the life of me I cannot stop the engine from starting and running!.

I have removed
FUSE 1 - ENGINE CONTROL MODULE
FUSE 3 - FUEL INJECTOR 1, 2, 3, 4
RELAY K7 - FUEL PUMP RELAY
CRANKSHAFT SENSOR

The car still starts and idles for ages without any problems at all.

I am at a loss as to how to stop this engine from running.

Ideas?

Pull the leads from the plugs. No fire, no run.

If you're doing a compression test surely you have the plugs or at least the one on the cylinder you're checking out anyway.

[git]I don't think that pulling the leads will help.[/git]

It might be running on its own oil, which is pretty much impossible to stop, unless you can stall it in gear. I hope it's not automatic.

How are you compression testing it? Through the glow plugs? If so, take 'em all out. That'll fix it. Or just unplug the injectors.

Wouldn't you have all the injectors out?

CO2 Fire extinguisher is your friend here.

to be honest the last couple of times I've done a compression test, ive let the engine run for a few seconds then turned the engine off at the key.

But then I don't find dynamic compression tests as good as a leak down test. Maybe I'm doing it wrong

That did the trick, unplugging the injectors.

Possibly might be a tad more effective actually discharging one into the air intake, but hey, I see what you say and in extremis and with a engine seconds away from spectacularly rearranging it's internal architecture anything is worth a go. biggrin

Doesn't have to be a CO2 extinguisher 'tho - a liquid one is totally, absolutely and 100% guaranteed to stop a runaway engine just as quickly... eek

Couldn't do the job in the end mind, the glowplugs were just too deep into the head. My compression tester has a L shape connector on the end.
I need to somehow try source a extension attachment.
