Mini race instead of qualifying 2020
Discussion
Not greatly keen on this if i'm honest. Monaco will be a bit of a 'mare unless something can be done to improve overtaking opportunities around there (unlikely). Same goes to a few other circuits on the grid i.e Hungary.
Even if grid was decided by race on Saturday, don't think we would of seen that much of a change at Monza for instance?
Does this help with the cost cuts, or could increased revenue from racing on the Saturday and extra coverage/sponsorship help to cover this off?
Will draw more conclusions when we here more definitive information as opposed to speculation.

I think a sprint race to decide pole where all the drivers are driving exactly the same car sounds amazing. Put them all in a new Mini and see who comes out on top. At least that way we would really know who is best.

Many other series are doing sprint races now and generally it works well - creates entertainment and still the best teams drivers generally come out on top.
Only thing against it is tradition and tight tracks. But liberty have already said they would have standard quali and race at Monaco etc. which in a way will make Monaco even more of a special occasion.
Gets my vote (and I prefer tradition) as long as it's weighted in time, points and spectacle as very much a secondary thing to the main race.

Daft idea I think. I would go with:
Q1 - unchanged
Q2 - unchanged
Q3 - top 10 drivers do a 1 lap shootout, consisting of out lap, flying lap, in lap. Clear track, no traffic.
The running order of Q3 is the tricky bit. I think you’d have to order the Q3 running based on the Q2 results.
Perhaps give whoever is fastest in Q2 the power to decide whether to run standard order or reverse order and go either first or last respectively. Let’s say it rained in Q2 and it’s a drying track then whoever runs last in Q3 will likely be the fastest. However on a dry track with rain starting then whoever goes first is likely to be fastest. On a dry track then with the track rubbering in then whoever goes last might be fastest. This might be interesting because they could decide, based on weather and track conditions whether to ‘stick or twist’, and they might get it wrong which would lead to some interesting top ten orders.
Or you could just say Q3 running is dictated by Q2 order, but then you might get teams trying to go the slowest in Q2 in order to run last in Q3, which has the potential to be another s
t show.
Thoughts?

As far as entertainment for the masses go qualifying is a big issue for motorsport IMO. What other sport goes to such lengths to give the best competitors an even bigger advantage? To be fair most other series don't have the issues F1 does with the cars but still.
Personally I'd ditch it entirely and go for more racing with grids set in reverse championship order for the first one and the results of the first one for the second one. Ditch DRS first of course.

FP1 and FP2 on Friday. Sprint Qualifying on Saturday morning. Qualifying race Saturday afternoon - one set out tyres. Same amount of fuel in each car for a balls-out 30 lap race to decide the grid for Sunday's race.
Problem is that the qualifying race could well end up being more exciting than the actual race.

It just goes to show you'll never satisfy everyone. Knockout round qualifying is probably the best thing F1s done in years, I mean just look at how many other motorsport series even including bikes rushed to adopt it, even series where there's a bit of an inferiority complex and they would hate themselves to admit f1 had a good idea and copy it.
But no, its F1, as usual brings a gun to a knife fight and manages to shoot itself in both feet with 1 round. Hey why don't we try timed knockout qualifying again?
