Having searched about common problems on the 2009/2010 2.0 TSI engine, I have come across the weak timing chain tensioner problem. Does anybody know a sure way of telling if the tensioner is bad? Going to see a 2010 car with a 2.0 TSI engine on Sunday. The car apparently has service history and shows oil changes at 10,000 mile intervals with 80,000 miles on the clock.

You can find instructions to measure chain stretch on dedicated forums, the tensioner needs a visual inspection

As above, you can measure stretch via VCDS. But you can also check the chain tensioner, takes about 10 minutes to do. Although, if there is no proof of it being changed, it will have a non-ideal revision.
