You got me wrong guys, it was a semi-serious question but something screwed up.
Up-the-dubs mentioned in another thread that something like 90% of Yanks claim a link back to the emerald isle.
I wondered what the figure was for PH Brits.
Me for one, on my sainted mothers side. (to be sure etc. etc.).

I've always found that a bit odd really - I know it's a new country, but what's wrong with saying you're American?
I got talking to a girl in Detroit once who proceeded to tell me she was from Manchester. I mentioned that she must have completely lost her accent as she sounded American. Then she said; "Oh no, I was born in Detroit, but my great grandparents were from Manchester, England."
This sort of thing seems common
My Mum's Welsh but I don't go around claiming the same.

I dunno about being odd. When I was over in Dublin a few years ago with some mates, we got talking to an old guy and he was able to tell us just what part of Ireland our ancestors came from. Sometimes very specific locations. Found it quite interesting.

I'm not saying ancestry is odd - I'm saying that claiming the nationality of a distant relative is a little odd.
The Yanks are the best (no insult intended to Americans, but this is my experience)
Spent 4 months in Boston a few years back. Their stories are hillarious. Do you know John Maguire form Cork? Have you seen a leprechan? The proverbial, and it actually happens, do you have electricity, roads, cars etc.... Not just an urban myth. I actually had a woman explain to me her Irish ancestry which, and I kid you not, went through a dog! Someones dog was born in Ireland whose family was in such and such. Which made her Irish, so she hugged me. I took advantage of the situation. Had to really.
