I’ve just tried explaining the etiquette of a gentleman removing his hat, when entering a building, to a Scottish person, who’d had a few sherbets. That’s a comedy script right there laugh. But it did get me thinking, he kind of had a point, why is it the ‘done thing’?

Plus you shouldn’t show the lining of your hat, and remember to doff it to people of higher social status.

I think there are also rules about taking it off in the hallway If arriving at your friend’s gaff but how you hold it incase you aren’t welcome or something.

If the persons building you are entering has the arse ache with you you're supposed to throw your hat in, I think.

Was the reference to the person's nationality pertinent, or just casual racism ?

I saw an article in the local Inverclyde newspaper yesterday that a man was given jailtime tor throwing his hat at his ex- outside a local shopping centre, so maybe he had a point. Best to keep it on yer heid and no take any chances?

Not these days. Us scotsman walk into high class restaurants, hat on head, trackies on and a cheap Chinese vape hanging out our mouth. Times are changing. Catch up. At 50p a unit, the days of the drunk scotsman have moved to the boarder. The rest of us are high class £14 quid a bottle drinkers thank you very much. Plus its colder here, I'll be keeping my hat on.

Trying to explain anything to a drunk scot is very difficult indeed, nigh on impossible, unless you're also drunk, and a scot. Gender has little to do with it.

I believe it dates back to medieval times when knights would remove their helmet as a sign of trust and respect.
