Worth a read if you have a .co.uk or .org.uk domain name:

Great article as I'm in the process of talking to them about a job. Knowing the average salary will help in negotiating the package

Kept receiving the emails. Ignored them.

No auto-renew on my account. Scheister behaviour but then the internet is full of that. Binning it off needs to be second nature to everyone smile

I'm with 1-2-3-reg and they have denied that they set these domains to auto renew. But were set to do just that. I had to modify the settings for the fking useless .uk ones.

luckily I cancelled auto renewal on every single useless .uk domain they gave me (a lot) as I could see that they were going to charge for the renewal and it was going to cost a lot, so for me they have all just expired and dropped away. But not without a regular clutter of "this domain is going to EXPIRE you should RENEW NOW!!11!!!!!" emails, which you have to read carefully to see that it is talking about the pointless .uk and not the original .co.uk.

Do thing 123-reg and other registrars have performed very badly over this, many companies will have just paid them.

I'd not even noticed that .uk were set to Auto renew in 123reg

They're not now, but looks like i've already missed the boat for this year

PCPro magazine had an article about 123-reg setting them to auto renewal in a edition about 2 or 3 months ago. 123-reg claimed that was not the case and it was a "misunderstanding". However, all mine were set to auto-renew. The magazine article said 123-reg would not charge anyone for the .uk domains unless they specifically renewed them.

If that is true, I would contact 123-reg and ask for a refund for these stty domains that no one wants.

That is an out and out lie from 123 Reg. I pruned all of my domains and saw the .uk ones set to auto-renew, even after i set them to not auto renew.

123 Reg are fraudsters more than a business.

I noticed this .uk scam some while back and contacted 123-reg who at that point had automatically signed me up for these .uk domain names which I didn't want and am pretty sure were initially set to auto-renew, I also spoke to Nominet over this but at that point didn't realise they were involved in the scam. I need to check my notes to see when this all initially kicked off.

I wonder if we can reverse the scam and automatically sign up Nominet and 123 executives to a similar deal, hey, this unsolicited and unwanted gift is free for the first year and you can't opt out of receiving it, but then we're going to take your pants down and scam you for each year afterwards. Can't see it standing up in court somehow!

Can see this costing Nominet a lot of money if a class action is brought against them (which it should).

Perhaps stick the Nominet and 123-reg CEO's on BBC Watchdog and watch them squirm.
