A pedestrian walks out in front of your car on purpose and you hit them?

You know the sort, they look right at you and then walk out in a smug game of chicken.... You can stop if you want, but what would happen if one day you just couldn't be arsed to brake.

Obviously you would say he just stepped out and you couldn't stop. The evidence backs this up, what with the pedestrian being in the road and all. But, what would the response from the :cop: be if you actually said "Well, the arrogant twat just walked out on purpose"

Just wondered, and no, I didn't hit one.

I would expect that the claim that they did it on purpose would be self incriminating, you would be admitting that you were aware that they were there and you had the feeling they were going to walk out even though it was obvious that they new you were there.

If they are anything like the arrogant stupid sulky teens around here who like to play this game whilst crossing the road, the best I can hope for is a well aimed strike with the door mirror.

Drop a gear and floor it, preferably with the wheels spinning.

They'll move.

A friend of mine in another force*, who is of a similar build to me (ie fat), once had a drink driver from a stolen car run off from him at the end of a pursuit.

There was no chance of my friend ever catching him on foot, but as the runner was giving it legs across an empty open air car park, my friend just drove alongside him at 10-15mph or so, pulled the driver's door catch on the Police car, then applied his size 11 rather firmly on the middle pedal, while at the same time letting the driver's door have free tarvel.

The driver's door caught the runner squarely on the arse, punted him over, allowing my friend to stop his car, get out at a leisurely pace, pick the runner up, dust him down, and slap on the cuffs.

I could obviously never condone this kind of behaviour from a colleague, and indeed, I did tell him how disappointed I was with his conduct. Fortunately, no one was injured by my friend's reprehensible beahviour.

That's my usual tactic

I like your colleagues style Dibble

Reminds me of a tale my sister tells of a colleague chacing a scrote on a bike... He couldn't quite catch the scrote, so he threw the bike at him. Scrote goes down and gets duly arrested. Allegedly, it was all caught on the town centre CCTV and again allegedly, everyone was invited to watch

I usually go for a comedy lock up if I am in a car with no ABS, the squealing and smoke usually clears them, if ABS then drop it a cog and nail it, soon has them doing a camp little run out of your way.

Happened to me in the centre of London the day I picked the 911 up. I stopped, got out and kicked the tt in the bollox. I hate little arseholes who do that shit.

If you deliberately hit them, then that is an assault. It will also be expensive and time-consuming. And make a mess of your pride and joy (unless you are one of London's Bus Drivers - in which case pace)

Whether anyone would be able to prove that in the face of the defence that he deliberately stepped out is a different matter.

You should deal with the numpty in the same way as you deal with any other numpty on the road - the tailgater, the dozy driver, the 4-up chav astra... Avoid the hazard and the accident, allowing them to pass safely.

Go home alive and unscathed and enjoy the thought that tomorrow your day may not have a numpty in it, but theirs certainly will. And one day they might meet a bigger numpty, who will help our race evolve - but it won't be you.

pitty....it'd solve the problem if they made it a 2p fine and gave the driver a stick of rock with "thanks to you, darwin has another one" written through it.

Yes that's my policy, but I can see the attractions of other approaches to the problem!

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Drop a cog and floor it with room to maneurve is my usual approach; they always move.... Having said that the last time i did it one of the little tykes spat on my car as i went past which i thought was a nice cave-dwelling touch!

A few years ago a teenage girl outside a local school tried to stare down a 8 legger tarmac waggon with a classic "do i look bovverrred" expression and got her hip shattered by the fuel tank for her troubles. The driver was not held accountable as there were numerous witnesses who stated she saw the waggon and stepped out regardless. A number of parents were up in arms about this decision

Doubtless they would be the irresponsible ones who haven't brought up their kids properly and want to blame everyone else for being the parents of little gits.

On a similar track - the nearby "social housing" area has a problem with children who play chicken with traffic. Deliberately jumping out in front of cars to force them to panic. Happened to me not so long ago (had the forethought to consider what might happen!). But a clear indication of the potential dangers involved...

Someone jumps out in front of you - who gets the blame now? Especially when a bunch of chavs are able and prepared to commit pergery (sp?) for a laugh. Its a worry and I now choose not to use that road....

If you can PROVE they were playing 'chicken' then Section 137 Highways Act 1980 seems to apply :

If a person, without lawful authorioty or excuse, IN ANY WAY wilfully obstructs the free passage along a Highway he is Guilty of an offence.

..... and for which he can have his collar felt. (PACE 1984 25 (3)..

or similar under Town Police Clauses Act 1847 S.28 but no specific power of arrest.

I once used the 'dip the clutch and rev it' approach to making one of them move - he jumped backwards and then took a bloody gert swing at my passenger door. Thankfully he missed and nearly fell over, but it did teach me a lesson - nothing to gain by this behaviour, and plenty to lose!

Ist pity as well that size 11 did not meet mit his backside as well. I trust that you (I mean he) was not too gently mit the handcuffs.

Did he have enough puff left to give a good blow into the breathlyser ...

But I always picture you as lean und mean... Never mind. You will lose weight mit all that sleuthing und less of the unexploded jam doughnuts.

(Und I remember my second ever post on here - where I upset every BiB on here I found article in paper which said that the met had spent thousands on an Idiot BiB's Guide to cookery where it explained in words of one syllabub how to open a tin of baked beans und how to open a bag of ready made salad mix as they were concerned about how you were all turning into tubs of lard after sitting about all day. }
