Manufacturers warranty for my 640d expires in a couple of weeks and I will defo extend it.

Monthly cost (250 excess best cover) is 67 per month, annual cost is 590, so a big difference (but not as a % car value etc).

Guy on phone suggested that they are different policies and that’s why they cost different amounts. As my mileage is 45k and I do around 8k per year, he suggested buying annual until I think I will exceed 60k and then flip to monthly.

My question is: is the threshold defo 60k miles for the increase? Boy on phone from bmw insurance thought so.

My 640d warranty is up for renewal now - £596 if under 60K, about £900ish if over, so yes it does make quite a difference.

Stick it on monthly now and you will be locked + at that price (+ a few £ due to inflation etc) even if you go above 60k.

If you have an annual and you go over 60k and you need to renew you will end up paying more.

It's a case of pay more now to save in the long run.

Not just inflation. They adjust the price as the car gets older, but still definitely beats leaving it on annual.

I think wear and tear is covered up to 100k, after that, you would probably have to argue the toss.

Late response to this thread but I’m on 209k in my 2012 640d cab and extended my warranty March 2015, paying monthly. First year it was about £70/month (comprehensive warranty with £100 excess) and it goes up by a couple of pounds a month every year. Currently £84/month.
Only issues are Rear camera/module replaced about 4 years ago and headlight control module (lost low beam so only had driving lights or main beam) about 3 years ago.
Had low pressure turbo replaced (whistling when cold) last year at 165k. No quibble each time, work done and covered.
It’s back in at the moment for investigation into engine rattle that sounds like it’s dropped a valve. No warning lights or loss of performance, they are dropping the sump to investigate. Had egr valve/cooler replaced this summer.
Will update outcome but they have provided a G39 320d for the last few weeks.

My M5 is about 6yrs old now, I regret taking the excess option.

I’m experiencing trivial issues that need fixing at a lowish cost, all of which seem very predictable when I google them and the cost of the excess payments is going to add up over the year.

I've got £100 excess on one of mine, anymore than two claims a year and I'd be better off having no excess. Only had one so far in three years so far though.

I'll be interested if it is an internal engine failure, whether they quote wear and tear, given the mileage.

Update to my engine issue.
Initial investigation (5hrs at my cost) of removing sump confirm metal residue in the bottom of the sump, replacement motor required.
Bmw have requested engine removal and strip (further 20hrs at my cost again) and full report for warranty decision.
Not happy at having to stand the investigation cost especially if they find an excuse not to honour replacement but felt I had no option!

20 hrs at stealer rates is a good chunk of a reconditioned engine from a specialist! I wouldn't be surprised if they bounce the warranty claim, but offer goodwill assuming it has been in the dealer network.
