Looking to get a 1958 car.
Went onto DVLA for MOT details and nothing on file
Now i might be a bit behind the times but i understood
1) No tax if over 40 years old and this has been going for some time
2) New ruling (cannot remember when it came out) tax exempt are also MOT exempt
If this is a new thing ( say in last 5 yrd) why isnt there any MOT details or do the DVL just scrub them all out?

Tax exempt and MoT exempt are not quite the same thing and have slightly different conditions around them.Went onto DVLA for MOT details and nothing on file

Pre 1960's vehicles have been MoT exempt for quite a long time. The recent change to a rolling 40 years did not impact them.
In addition to what the others have said, when you apply for a new V5C, ask for the car to be classified as historic. Once done, the car will be tax and MoT free - no need to SORN. You may receive tax reminders, but you can show your documents at the Post Office and not pay. Obviously, a voluntary MoT is advisable.
A last point, you might need a heritage certificate for DVLA to accept the vehicle as more than 40 years old. I don't know why.
