Looking for a good long distance motor
Discussion
Hey all,
I'm a musician and I spend most of my weekends driving up and down the country to various holiday parks with a fair bit of equipment in the back. I currently have a peugot 208 gti and I love it for many reasons, the power, the looks etc. But it's probably not the most sensible for my job, although I do manage to average 40mpg with it.
I've always been a hatchback fan, never really fancied estates much, I dunno why I just don't think they look as good. Does it just make sense for me to go the estate route? I'd like something that's comfortable, with a bit of power, comfort, similar if not better mpg to the peugot and looks good. I know, I'm not asking much. Any recommendations? Budget £13k.
Thanks in advance!

330d or C320CDI would seem to fit the bill?
My E90 was a great long distance car, although be careful of cabin noise at speed with the F30, especially with larger wheels and tyres. I've just moved to an F10 5 series for just above the OP's budget (2014 530d saloon with M Sport suspension and Harman Kardon sound; important for a musician!), and it's in a different league to the E90 or F30 for long distance driving - just superb. Again though, big wheels and tyres (mine are 19s...) cause noise in the cabin even with the F10's amazing sound deadening (at 30-40mph it's spookily quiet). Overall though, I love it. I've just returned from a family holiday in the F10 and the three hour journey each way was so effortless and relaxing - my wife and baby son slept the whole way too, which is a new thing!
It's a big car too, and swallows my guitars, cello and amps with ease.Edited by RobM77 on Tuesday 17th September 14:33
Cheers guys!

If you're fitting all of your gear in a 208 then any large saloon will swallow your kit up with ease with this in mind I'd be going for a 3.0d engined saloon, also you're going to want something with sensible if you're travelling all over the country.

I've spent a bit of time in one as Mark Hales used one as his coaching car for a while. He's me driving it at Cadwell Park:What would you say about something like this?

I was extremely impressed for a front wheel drive Audi. I feel the 5 series is far superior in handling, and slightly above in other areas, but the A5 was certainly a competent and very comfortable car.
