what is the best way to transer large files over the internet to a family/friends?

too big to email, tried "sendthisfile.com" - ok but slow.

can i use ftp somehow?

Sure,

if either one of you has some ISP webspace.

Or, one of you just buy some (click link in corner of this forum)

Or, if one of you has a little nouse, you can try and setup an FTP server on one of your PCs (but your ISP might take a dim view of this, it may end up being against your t&c)

What size file is it ?

You could try MSN or ICQ for example.

How big are the files?

Gmail maximum attachment size is 10mb, combined with a free file split utility like www.dekabyte.com/filesplitter/ (the first free one when googling for filesplitter) and Bob's in the family, especially if you both have a gmail account.

FTP server is a good way to go as Jamie suggests but you may get probs, I've used BulletFtp before on trial which does the trick.

there is a program called "waste" which allows secure peer to peer transfer.
