In brief:

Friend is looking for a black dial cosmograph Daytona with oyster bracelet. Think the reference is 116500.

He is ok with the list price (just over £10.5k locally) but naively thought it would be the kind of thing he could walk into a shop and buy. Local AD (obviously) says no chance and waiting list is closed.

Just wondering what the chances of securing one of these would be and how much is the going rate? Can be sourced globally as long as genuine and from a reputable source.

Assuming we’re talking a hefty markup which puts it above what he’s willing to pay, what alternatives would there be? Assume sticking to Rolex for now and any s/h purchase would need to be absolutely mint.

£20k is the starting point for a used one of these.

Ok that’s out then.

Alternatives? I can only suggest something like a black dial ceramic sub.

He’s now thinking birth year might work as having more intrinsic value than a new(er) sub.

How much would a 1970 sub fetch? I imagine a vintage Daytona would require a nice sit down on being told the price.

For other suggestions, basically something that looks like and has the same connotations as the black dial Daytona. I suggested something like a heuer Autavia or other vintage heuer but they’re not his bag.

Zenith used to make the movements for the early Daytonas:

Which is also hard to track down new.

Does he want a chronograph or "a Rolex"?

I would suggest a Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon would be worth considering as an alternative to a black dial Daytona

https://www.omegawatches.com/en-gb/watches/speedma...

And the new Seamaster 300m is a good alternative to a Sub at about half the price. Even better you can walk into a shop today and buy one, no messing about with waiting list nonsense...

ETA Ignore the above, just noticed this from the first post...

If your mate want a stainless steel Rolex without messing around with waiting lists or paying a premium for a second hand one then it's a Date Just or Oyster Professional I think...

But a £10k budget for a watch opens up a whole host of interesting possibilities - almost certainly worth considering other brands

For around £10k he could get a Rolex Submariner and an Omega Speedmaster. Whilst submariners are still wait list, if he would buy the Speedmaster at the same time I bet there is a dealer that would do a bundle deal. That would cover the bases of having a Rolex and having a black dial chronograph!

Tudor Black Bay Chrono? - A lovely thing - I'd be tempted myself.

How about the Blancpain fifty fathoms chrono or a JLC deep sea chrono ? Both excellent watch makers and a level above Omega and Tudor (IMO)

^ This is really excellent advice.

Alternatively get a Steinhart Vintage Red and a Bulova Lunar Pilot for about £750 all in:

(Yeah, I know he wants a Rolex, just a bit of fun there)

You can have one on your wrist tomorrow or even today if you pop to a WF shop, no need to source globally as they are in full supply in the UK grey market you just have to pay the price.

Great advice, he could also consider the Black Bay Chrono instead of the Speedmaster if he wanted to show more loyalty to Rolex.

Either way, a Speedmaster/Black Bay Chrono and a Sub will offer much better value than a grey market Daytona, which is his only realistic option for that watch.

I’m not sure “better value” is a term that can be used here. We are talking luxury watches, and nobody really needs them.

The OP’s ‘friend’ needs to visit some shops, try on some watches, see which look great on their wrist, and which look silly. And then make a judgement based on experience and knowledge, not one based on endless suggestions from us lot.

Is there a reason this friend would rather have Rolex?

Head to a backwater town like Nuneaton and avoid the big wait lists of south-east dealers. My brother managed to get a batman following a 6-week wait.

I recon you might find a 70 sub for £10k in the US, but would expect a really nice one from a dealer is going to be £15k+.

70 Daytona is going to be £50k+

I recon he might get an AP Royal Oak City of Sails for £10k ish.

GP Laureato are very nice chronographs, similar in style to the Daytona.

Piaget Polo S

Bulgari Octo are seriously good watches, one has a tachy bezel.

i assure you the 'friend' is not me. i've yet to do the splurge watch thing, but if i were to do so it'd be either a monza or autavia reissue.

if i was oblique its because its a friend wanting to buy as a significant gift for their OH. hence the brand and model is something they've attached a significance to. they went to the AD here and were rather dismayed with the inevitable [yet polite] news that it just wasn't going to happen. my telling this person the reality of obtaining this watch was the equivalent of me pissing on their chips.

hence suggesting alternatives is rather difficult given that all options now look like second best, and trying on isn't an option.

some nice watches posted, thanks for those. i'm going to suggest either a birth year or current MY black face sub.

I just can't get past the snowflake on the hour hand. Puts me off the Tudors that have it.
