Hi Folks,

Due to a change in work location my commute is going from 65 miles a day mixed driving to 30 or so all A road. This in turn has made me question the merit in having my MK7 Golf GTD Wagon and was thinking I might not be doing the miles especially considering DPF stuff etc.

As such I have been looking at mainly fun japanese options with the caveats being it needs to be semi practical and house a rear child seat and fit a pram. Budget would be up to 13k or so depending on what it was, so far I have considered:

- DC5 (Viewed one locally and was nice and had roomy boot but was marginally put off by 3 door)
- FD2 (This is leading so far, 5 doors and more modern inside than the DC5 although prices seem on the up and rust could be an issue)
- Forester STi (always liked these too and the estate is very appealing although apparently the 2.5 engine can be prone to issues such as head gasket failure)

Is there anything else to look at or does anyone have any comments on the above 3? Cheers

FD2 is too collectible to commute in IMO, especially as prices are heading upwards... same for the DC5, also both of those don't much like being driven in winter from a corrosion POV.

Of the three I would say the forester, but the MPG isn't great.

If you want DC5 performance I would look at a cheap EP3 Type R if it'll be big enough...or if you can find a well priced one then an Accord Euro-R could fit the bill.

Thanks for the replies folks ideally not keen on any VAG stuff just didn't find the ones I have had previously too engaging (MK6 GTI,MK7 R and GTD). Should have mentioned also that due to car sharing/cycling the commuting requirement is 2-3 days a week so 60-90 miles. The evo estate is an example I hadn't considered, also any vehicle would be undersealed full cavity with dinitrol.

I have had 2 x EP3's in the past so would like something different ideally.

Forester or Impreza STI wagon would probably be the best choice. I'd go for the Impreza as it's still got the old EJ20.
