I bought my 540 new in March 17. Twice in that time the system has slammed on the brakes while reversing, it really felt and sounded as if I’d hit something but no the system had malfunctioned both times.

Yesterday Mrs BC was driving at about 35 mph with the vehicle in front about 3 car lengths away when the system applied emergency brakes again. It was only for a few seconds and corrected before we came to a complete stop but dangerous as we could have been rear ended.

I reported the first 2 incidents but BMW could find nothing wrong. Should I get them to look again? It seems to be a difficult problem to pinpoint.

Well at 35mph and 3 car lengths you're too close, less than a second from the rear of the other car (although you could be underestimating the distance from the other car), you can alter the sensitively of the AEB I believe if you like to cuddle up to the car in front.

Mrs BC was driving and tells me she was doing no more than 30 and the distance was ‘several car lengths’. I was in the passenger seat and not taking much notice although that changed as soon as the emergency brakes came on. Certainly if she was too close I’d have noticed.

Earlier you said "three car lengths".

Which was it?

If I knew the answer to that I’d say, it certainly wasn’t too close. I said 3 car lengths Mrs BC is saying much more.

Anyway as the car is under warranty BMW are sending someone to look at it today.

Well what I'd do is use the 2 second rule, really easy and then see if it's still doing it.
