What is the biggest chain that fits through a motorcycle bay ground anchor in Central London?

Was thinking about getting a Pragmasis Protector 16mm chain but no idea if it'll even fit through the ground anchor.

Can’t give you a size but they’re not big. They are a standard make/model of anchor, just on a big rubber stand. They’re the circular ones with a half-circle which lifts up, if that helps?

I’ve only seen them in Westminster bays and even then they don’t all have them.

City parking spaces have big bollards to chain to, no size restriction but you do need one long enough.

And to get there early enough to get close.

Depending on what the bike is you may be going OTT, my 2 year old (at the time) CBR125R, 12 year old (at the time) CBR600 and 8 year old (at the time) CBF600 we’re fine with just a basic disc lock.

One piece of advice - if parking on the road, never wash your bike and leave random bits of tape on it so that they look like they’re holding bits on (even if not) - far less likely to be nicked of it looks like st

16mm is pointless.

A decent 10mm will defeat bolt croppers and nothing defeats angle grinders

Also with a 10mm you stand more chance of getting it through the frame/exhaust, not many bikes you'll be able to get a 16mm through the frame.

I'd go for two 10mm over one 16mm.

I’m using a skimpy chain (probably something like 8mm) and disc-lock at the moment, but even with just the disc lock only no one was interested in it. Keith’s advice above is well worth following. If the bike looks like a turd they’ll always find something more desirable.

Thanks for the advice guys. Will opt for a longer less thick chain. Seen those ground anchors in quite a few places and think there'll be more installed in future. I'll be picking up a Kawasaki Vulcan S tomorrow and will have to figure out the best part of the frame to secure with the chain. My hope is that a cruiser is not as sought after compared to a sports bike and with a decent chain off the ground and 2 disc locks, plus possibly a cover, it'll survive London as long as possible!

Keep the chain as short as possible, you don't really want any of it laying on the ground if you can help it, it's easier to break/cut on the ground.

Which 10mm has been demonstrated to do this? Show me and I'll buy it.

Otherwise you need a chain which is tested, and a Pragmasis 16mm is.

Entirely agree re: angle grinders however.

I had a couple of bikes stolen this year, had a few locks on them but one they couldn't cut despite lots of attempts looking at the chain was a 13mm oxford chain, obviously i wasn't there so don't know what cutters they had. I've now got a 16mm almax which i can get through the frame, and a couple of said 13mm oxford chains for the wheels.

There were attack tests in Ride magazine, I'm sure google will find them

Well if you could show me, that would be great because you're making the claim, I cannot find it on Google (although on German VPN) but I just can't believe it, frankly if you show me I'm still more likely to thing the bloke was a pussy.

I mean 10mm is fk all, my 16mm has all sorts of weird metallurgy sciency bks before it can make the same claim which is independently verified, and I've still seen one broken by, an admittedly enormous man, with scaffolding poles as extensions.

You're making the claim "16mm chains are pointless", a quick Google fails to show any 10mm chains guaranteed as uncroppable, 16mm you can see several brands including Pragmasis and Almax. Anyone who's used bolt cutters knows they're usually good for 10mm easy.

You're making the claim against consensus, so "burden of proof" is on you mate. Personally I'll just continue to believe you're mistaken, or the individual(s) in the article simply were not very adept at using bolt cutters, as any manufacturer who could make a 10mm uncroppable chain would presumably sell loads of them.

Anyway... I really don't care enough, but uncroppable chains are the way to go if you can find one guaranteed as such, but they're still limited. That's the key thing here.

I'm simply telling you what I recall and the source

I used to sell car / bike security devices so recall such things

If you want me to work for you, I want to be paid

Cheers, I read a couple of reviews. They certainly defeated at least one person, who was definitely using the croppers I would have expected to have beaten it.

I don't see any guarantees made the manufacturer (but they do claim!) so I've emailed them to see what they say. It's very impressive if they can guarantee uncroppable at 10mm given that larger specialist manufacturers have failed to produce the same results. Honestly very happy to be proven wrong.

We'll see what they say, but I'm still skeptical. If they guarantee I am very tempted to buy one and have a go at cracking it myself given they'd accept it back!

There's no need to be funny about a bit of reasonable skepticism. Let's not fall out over it.
