Apple watch, series 5, connection query

I have just bough one of these for the wife and when trying to pair it's coming up with iphone out of date, it's an iphone 6 with the latest version 12.4.1, is there a work around?

I don’t think so:-

“Apple Watch Series 5 and Apple Watch Series 3 require iPhone 6s or later with iOS 13 or later.”

I did install ios13 onto my SE, which is the one after the 6 I believe.

Yep, sorry - you need a 6S or SE or later to run iOS 13, which is what you need for the series 5 Apple Watch.

Yes and no respectively.

The initial setup on the watch involves pairing it with a suitable phone. If you don’t have an iOS 13 phone to pair it with you won’t get any further than that.
