Took the dog for a walk earlier and noticed a 4 engine passenger plane flying quite low. By that I mean noticeably lower than planes normally fly over where I am. It also looked like it was going really slow. I thought it was an A380 but couldn't be sure. It was heading north.
Didnt have my phone at the time but checked Flight radar when I got back. The only large plane I could find north of me with the matching flight plan was this one, which is a 747.

Surely if it took off from Heathrow it should be at cruising altitude by the time it passed me in Mitlon Keynes? It didn't appear to be climbing. It might not be the same plane but not sure which airport it.could have landed at in the 20 mins before I checked.
Any ideas?

It was quite likely that 744. Normally at medium weights the time to reach initial cruise would be almost 30 mins. Couple that with London TMA traffic and occasionally we'll pass MK nearer 8000'. It isn't common but it does happen.
The initial cleared alt from LHR is 6000'. Normally we're cleared above that quite early but just sometimes we stay level for a long way.

Cool, thanks for the info, interesting. Definitely not something I've noticed before. Sometimes though I do hear odd engine sounds overhead as well. The initial cleared alt from LHR is 6000'. Normally we're cleared above that quite early but just sometimes we stay level for a long way.
