Well I have just got my hands on a 1997 840 Ci Individual with 129k on the clock. I’m tired of losing money via depreciation on my daily driver and want to use it for my 13k miles a year which is mostly motorway. The car was a little rough on the rear arches but was very cheap.I love it and was wondering if anybody else is doing lots miles in a 8?Strangely I’m replacing a 630i who used to do the job.
Interesting choice coming from an E63 which is at the very bottom of the depreciation curve, especially the more reliable prefacelift with N52 engine - just the time to have one and keep - still a modern car by today's standards and rust free.
E31 is a classic which needs dry storage if you don't want it to perish before your eyes, let alone the usual high maintenance of ageing heavy V8's mechanicals.

Yeah, the change makes no sense, they're both on the end of their depreciation curves but they're both going to be money pits, the old 8er even more so I would imagine.E31 is a classic which needs dry storage if you don't want it to perish before your eyes, let alone the usual high maintenance of ageing heavy V8's mechanicals.
Glad to see you quote the N52 as being reliable, two months ago I bought an E92 330i with this engine (enjoying it so far).
Well yes it doesn’t make sense as my 630i has cost me £300 in repairs other than servicing and tyres in 3 years and 50,000 miles.I just love the 8 and it’s the last chance to buy at a reasonable price.I just like the challenge and have a good local garage who like working on old stuff! It’s a case of maintenance v depreciation and driving something cool!
Rust is the enemy number one of these venarble GTs. Inspect closely and fix immediately. Check seam seals at the bottom of the doors - sometimes they just peel off due to hidden rust below where the door outer skin is folded and where the sheet metal ends. If still ok liberally apply cavity wax via the two drain holes. And then twice per year spray some oil in to keep moisture away. Same with rear wheel arches - access from the boot - your cavity wax spray should come with and extension spout - what I did is I took two and connected them to be able to reach really far into the wheel arch and spray some stuff in. And the usual jack mounting points as well as the front wings - check closely and if the paint is dark use flashlight! Any discoloration or even the tyniest bubbling are something you want address immediately. Of the car is exposed to road salt you want to wash/rinse under the hood any salt there as rust can otherwise work its way through, undisturbed and hidden from view until you one day discover a hole or two, ask me how I know... If you intend to keep it longer also remove wheel arch liners and closely inspect the metal and the stone chip layer on it - you never know what you'll find... It's a beautiful car and a piece of automotive history and it would be a shame to let it perish...time/funds permitting of course.
