Hi all,

I have my eye on a 2014 640D but would like some advice please.

During the week, it will be used for very short journeys, possibly about 3-4 miles at a time and all city (engine probably wont get up to temperature).

A couple of times a month, it will be going up and down the M69 from Leicester to Coventry return.

My question is that would this be OK for the engine and allow for the DPF to regen, etc.

Thanks all!

You need to look at the mileage you'll be doing and calculate the fuel costs vs a 640i, diesels don't make sense on very short journeys and if the other runs aren't that long say 300-400 miles then it'll be better to have the 40i than 40d, I have a 740d that gets used on 400 mile trips most weeks and short runs in between hence it makes sense, if I wasn't doing the long runs I'd get a petrol.

Thanks, however 640i's within my price range are super rare hence why I'm looking at the diesel.
Annual mileage will be about 5-6000 miles.

It will be fine as long as you regularly use the full rev range. If your not then I’d advise you don’t get one

It’ll be fine. I do the same sort of mileage and trips with my 640d

Hold out until you find an “i”. No point in having the diesel, and the petrol will be far nicer to drive.

That is an interesting comment.I have often wondered about "Italian tune ups " in my 330d,,,,,I have 95k on the clock in 5 years an awful lot of motorway miles but in this car 90mph is only 2000 RPM it has basically never gone near 3000rpm apart from a few times
No issues as we speak though
