Hi, does anyone know of any free to view map websites that show historical OS maps (the UK specifically)?. One site that's claimed to be good is old-maps.co.uk. I tried that particular site as I was interested to know when the houses where I live where roughly built. One of the map years I clicked on for that are, from the mid-late 70s, showed the houses I was trying to locate weren't yet built. However, having discovered a map booklet in the loft of the area from around the same time, I found that these houses were in the map with their street names listed. To back this up, I spoke to a local person who assures me that they built around the mid-late 70s, so the old maps site map I clicked on should show this.

Looks like to me old-maps is highly inaccurate and uploading the wrong maps for the wrong years.

I've heard Google Earth and Google Maps have an historical map overlay feature that you can place an old map over the existing currant map, but the version I've used doesn't seem to have this.

Same resource I use but prefer the variable swipe overlay https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=8&lat=53...

Cheers for that.

I've checked out both sites above and they don't seem to be very specific to a certain year. The NLS site (when using their drop-down map list) only provides a date from say 1937-1960 (most detailed maps seem to be from the late 1800s/early 1900s, 1930s, 40s and some 2960s maps, nothing from the past 40 years), and if you're trying to find when a certain building was built etc its not much help in pinpointing when it was built, unless it's a very old, historical building and not some semi you used to live in on some estate.

It sounds like the maps you're looking for will still be in copyright, in which case your only resort is to raid second-hand bookshops and the like.
