Finding an IFA

I’m coming up 59 and looking to retire when my Wife turns 55 in two years time. I’ve got two DB and two DC pensions and my Wife’s got two DC pension all of which I monitor almost daily to see how they are doing. I feel that we should be able to comfortably retire and want to start preparing for the big day now. I know that I need advice from an IFA but after being sold a Deferred Interest Endowment mortgage in the early 90’s I find it hard to trust anyone with my money. I’ve looked at the various websites but how do you choose an IFA?

Do some basic research/get some knowledge about what you might want to do/can do?

Ask any prospective IFA specific questions based on this to see if they actually know either (a) as much as you or (b) more than you.

I’ve tried that with three different IFAs over a period of about 20 years. The answer to both (a) and (b) in each case was no but they would have skimmed a healthy amount off my investments while offering no value at all.
