Cheap semi-daily car (~£1,500) that's reasonable fun

Until recently, I had a couple of cars I was using as daily cars - an Aston V8 Vantage and an Alfa Romeo spider (2007, the convertible version of the Brera). I also have an old Porsche Cayenne - I've always been happy to drive it (not nearly as boring as I expected when I bought it 6 years ago) but it was getting used very rarely.
A month ago, I part-ex'd the Aston and Alfa against a much more expensive car which I intended to use as a daily car most of the year - with the Cayenne sharing the load a bit. However, this week I've had to use the Cayenne (the new car went back to the dealer to have a couple of minor issues sorted) - and I'm sick of using it already. Although I know the other car will be back on Friday, I still think I need a more interesting car to use some of the time - the Cayenne can go back to occasional use when I need 4 seats and / or luggage space.
Budget is far less than Aston / Alfa this time - I'd like it to be ~£1k but might be willing to stretch to £2-3k if necessary. I'm tempted by MX5 (never had one) - but everything at the ~£1,500 or lower price seems to have rusty wheel arches / sills (even the adverts tell you that).
Any suggestions? It must be fun (but doesn't have to be particularly fast), doesn't need to be convertible and it must be pretty reliable and cheap to run.

It's hard to see past an MX-5 really at your specified budget, I dare say if you go upto the 2k range you will find one which has had the usual rusty wheel arches and sills already repaired so maybe consider upping the budget slightly to save yourself the cost of doing the repairs in the near future.
If you use Facebook theres a number of owners groups where there are regularly cars for sale in various conditions, Now is the time of year to start looking for a purchase as prices will slide again in winter before rising again next spring.
