E46 320d auto box issues
Discussion
troublesome day yesterday;
auto box decided to lunch itself
no previous warnings at all
drove about 30 miles, all motorway, stopped off to make phone a call, car idling in services.
Finished call, moved off and sound like clutch slipping slightly.
Carried on, and got worse over a period of 15 mins.
Was on a A road by this time
Still Slipping, getting worse - no warning lights on dash.
Then heard a god damn awful noise from the rear of the car - first instinct was prop shaft / bearing, so pulled over; luckily into a garden centre car part.
Nothing to do with Gearbox - I'd got a flat rear tyre.
Doesn't explain the slippage though.
Replaced wheel, recommenced journey.
more slippage, and within 5 mins I was struggling to get too 30mph. now had 'cog' symbol on dash
so, pulled over again, and this time called recovery !
Recovered home.
Browsing eBay, there is a box on that seems a perfect fit - same car, same year, same engine, and only 20 mins from me.
is it possible to just do a swap ?
any 'coding' likely to be required ?
I would look to use a local garage to remove / re-fit

If you can get the ECU with it all well and good. But really, if the part number is the same it will just fit and work although clearing fault codes will be req'd. About 5 hours labour plus oil. A new filter screen and pan gasket is a good idea. Make sure the garage knows how to fit the t/converter to the box if it's loose - gearbox stood on tail, lower converter in, spin it and it will clunk and drop into the oil pump drive. If they don't, the oil pump drive will break as they do the bell housing bolts up.
It needs the correct oil which isn't normal red ATF Dexron, not sure what it is.
I think these have the GM autobox like the 330d, could be wrong.

Hi I've just read your thread - glad you got it sorted - if it helps I have an E46 320d auto for spares repairs (it starts and drives) I'd be happy for it to go to a good PH'r home for repair or just breaking for parts.

just to conclude - new box in, and the car is back to normal
Great service from the garage too.
They also pointed out that my idle vibration was a broken engine mount !
Car will be going into them to be fixed soon; I haven't the time nor inclination to fix it myself
