£10k 4x4, I'm I mad?!?!?!

Hi All,

In preparation for winter and living in the countryside I'm thinking of parking up the 911 Carrera 2 (996 Manual coupe) from its daily duties soon.

In the past, I had an old S-Class for wafting around in but that was sold 4-5 months ago now.

I've been toying with the idea of purchasing a used 4x4, which is a first for us, we have always had cars in the Ice household.

So the plan was to look for a Mercedes ML, Volvo XC90, BMW X5/X3 of the diesel variety.........

......but for £10-12k, you can purchase a Porsche Cayanne Turbo... all 4.5 or 4.8 V8 Twin Turbo'ness......will this just be wallet crippling or ruinous?

Am I mad, or should I just stick to the usual premium derv SUV's mentioned above?

I bought a £4k 4.4 V8 Range Rover last year for similar reasons and it's been just fine, maybe I've just been lucky?

Screw it.
Just do a bit of homework. Unless there were engine or other mega issues with the model you are looking at (Porsche have some form for this) then go for it.
They are generally well made and engineered cars.

oh wow hah, missed that... yup,definately not from there!!

I've seen a couple of private sales around the £10k mark recently so can be done...very small buyers market for them.

I bought my (53 plate) Cayenne S at the start of 2013 - paid £8k. I didn't check it properly, so initially needed a few things fixed which were expensive.

However, in the last 3 or 4 years it's cost me virtually nothing. The coolant expansion tank cracked which was a fairly cheap fix.

I completely neglect it. A few bits of interior trim have broken (the plastic covers over the seat rails that bolt to the floor) but the seats / dash would look like new if I gave them a clean - and that's on a 107k mile car.
Mechanically mine seems sound.

It's a brilliant winter car especially if it snows and every winter I love the heated steering wheel.

I bought it because I needed it at the time, although that only lasted for about 6 months. 6.5 years later, I still think it's one of the best cars I've owned.
Buy carefully and I don't think you'd regret it.

Modern 4x4 are too heavy and momentum is not what you want in the snow / ice

In deep snow my 4.7 Jeep with mud and snow tyres was fantastic - but that's been 10 days in the last 4 years !

Might as well go for a fast one: any premium SUV has the ability to generate large bills, so you may as well have fun with it. I've had my supercharged Range Rover sport for almost a year and a half with no major problems: it gets driven all over the place, on and off road, and has only thrown up a couple of easily fixable issues. Was considering getting rid of it due to an upcoming change in work but not sure I can bring myself to do it as it just does everything I need so well.
