Buying gas and electricity ... where from?

We are moving house. In a couple of weeks time.
The flat we currently occupy is not connected to the gas supply, so we have simply bought electricity from London Electricity, who sent us the first bill when we moved in (5 years ago.)
The house we are moving to has electricity and gas, and I'd like to shop around for the cheapest deal. However, how does all this work? I know that there is now alot of competition in the marketplace, with lots of different suppliers, but how do I find out which will be the cheapest for us? (Bear in mind that we don't yet live in this house, so have no idea how much of either we will use.)
