Hi All

Switched our CGTS recently for a GT4 with 8000 miles, noticed recently that there is an acrid smell when parking up after a drive. To me it smells like cooking clutch, it’s not the usual hot engine / oil smell. No judder or problems with gear selection.
Is it a normal smell for a GT4, had it back at dealer but they say there is nothing wrong and it’s normal and we need to get used to our new car. I wouldn’t expect to be worrying about clutch failure so soon!

I’m assuming you can pull straight onto your drive i.e. you don’t have to use the clutch to manoeuvre and park up?

Brakes?

Had that distinctive brake / clutch lining smell...it’s not the brakes as I’ve measured the temps.

Highly unlikely at the mileage you've indicated, I know, but has it had a recent clutch replacement ?

You can diagnose a clutch slip problem very easily.

Drive at about 20 mph with the car in 4th gear. Then floor the throttle. If the rev counter soars and road speed doesn't you've got a knackered clutch.

Clutches suffer from "torque" not "power". This test presents a "high torque" situation. It's like riding a push-bike in too high a gear so you have to stand on the pedals to get any acceleration. A weak clutch will slip if exposed to this sort of challenge.

Hi

The previous owner had the 3rd gear replacement work done prior to us buying it.

Is there any way of establishing if it had a new clutch assembly fitted at the same time as the the gearbox issue was being addressed ?
If it did have a clutch, that’d be why it smells. The resins used to bond the clutch linings together seem to be a lot more pungent (and for far longer) than those previously used.

Hi, I own 2 GT4s, I did smell something similar on my example that has only covered 6000 miles, it only happened one though....

Hi

Did anything come of this? Ive had my GT4 for a few months and have started to smell this too. No issues with clutch or anything else to point to an issue and googling it seems to be normal. The car is on 18K.

Wouldn't have thought much would come of it. My old 981 GT4 had a clutch like stink at times, and just this evening after driving my manual Cayman GTS 4.0 home from work in fairly heavy traffic there was a decent whiff of it. Never had the slightest hint of clutch slip or misbehaviour. Not certain how much of it really is clutch smell, but it seems to emanate from the vents behind the doors. I stopped worrying a long, long time ago.
