New car for 2020 - Petrol - Hybrid or EV?

OK I'm pondering treating myself next year to a new car (the first new car I've ever bought to be fair). I only do around 5k miles a year, anymore it will be because of work and they will pay mileage.
I tend to keep cars like pets, so keep them for a long time, like 10 years plus.
I'm currently drawn to the new BMW M340 touring, though depending on size that could end up as an X3 40m , a 540 tourer or something, or if I win the lottery perhaps the Alpina B3. So the theme is fairly powerful 300bhp+ petrol car.
But after watching an interesting program on youtube about the german car manufacturing business last night, it got me thinking.
If I intend to keep it for a long time, would I better buying an EV or Hybrid?
I look at something like the 530e, and the electric range isn't great. The rumoured 545e could be interesting, but I worry about the weight impact of the batteries on performance and practicalities, or perhaps that's unfounded?
Is the tech ready yet?
Is our infrastructure ready yet?
On the flip side, are we going to be taxed or penalised out of petrol cars in the next 15 years?
Will the combustion engine still be ok in the UK in 15 years?

I've run a leased Merc C350e plug in hybrid for the past 2 years, and I've gone back to owning a diesel.
Hybrids make no real sense if you're racking up motorway miles. You're just lugging dead weight.
If you do a lot of short journeys and can access charging facilities at each end they can be very efficient. The C350e would cost about 50p to charge at home, but that would save me about £2 of petrol. Great for short trips to the shops, but pretty insignificant on longer runs.
They are very complex machines and I wouldn't want to run one without a warranty.
