Hi , we are looking at buying a house at RH20 2LT.
Seems from doing searches there is no mobile signal to speak of and the BT line gives 1- 3mb download !!
Its a bit rural, not massively .

What options are there if any to get reasonable broadband. Are there outside aerials that can be installed so maybe mobile broadband could work .
I have been looking on the internet but cant see what is available , what solutions might work

Thanks

Looks like most mobile networks will get a decent 4G signal outdoors. 4G external aerials aren't too pricey - I have one for our camper van, hooked up to a MiFi device. Pulls in a decent signal where mobiles can't - and useful when we have the foil insulation on the windows.

You could get a 4G aerial up on the chimney stack, pointing at the nearest mobile transmitter.

This ^^^^^ . We're in the same situation and looking at the Vodafone Gigacube unlimited offer, with a 4G aerial, Huawei B525, (The B528 vodafone ship is inferior) cat 6e and 3 x Zyxel wifi access points. We're doing a site survey and some speed tests next week just to check it will get the speeds we need. We work from home and need to get a better speeds than 9.0/0.4mbps on BT. We're also working with Openreach on a community project as the village exchange is fibre but there is current only FTTC and no FTTP...and being furthest away from the exchange the speeds here are rubbish.
At your postcode it looks like you have decent outdoor 4g from all providers, so have a look at Three, their unlimited mobile broadband is much cheaper than Vodafone.

I've posted on other threads, and continue to do so as it seems I'm the only one whose done it...

Buy an active booster from the likes of mobilesignalbooster etc .

Works perfectly. I used to have no signal indoors. Now have full signal. You can boost 3g, 4g, or both. Around £250.

Mate of mine has just bought a 4G router - works very well. £30 a month unlimited data apparently.

Wouldn't he need to solve the lack of signal problem 1st?

You can pay openreach to install fibre, but its very expensive (a number of K depending on distance and difficulty, they removed a requirement to limit prices a while ago)

If you can afford it, it could be a solution.

Also looks as if openreach are following the B4RN model with community installs.

installing fibre looks like a long shot, as suggested the solution for now would be a LTE router + MIMO antenna, I used one in Ireland at the parents gaff, you need to point it towards the nearest tower and of course work out what provider to use and get a generous data allowance.

if the mast is too far away you probably need a larger antenna with more gain, LTE routers can be got relatively cheap and many are unlocked so any sim can be used.

I used these ebay sellers, very reputable.

Sorry - I didn't mention he put an aerial up.... not a massively strong signal, but enough for a stable 10Mbps download on 4G.

I can get well over 50Mb/s in Ireland on LTE, distance and line of sight to mast is crucial.

Ah, right by the Acorns Cattery wink

We have really good friends 100yds up the road from your new house and frankly the service is ste at best, I can’t use his internet at all.

I think my mate has a dongle of some description but even that is pretty crap so I’m not sure what the answer is other than don’t expect to surf the net as much as you did smile

I’ve just moved to West Chiltington and it’s also pretty crap here albeit better than the outskirts of Ashington which was awful.

Not much help I’m afraid but quite a nice place to live yes

It will all depend on what kit you install - a dongle often struggles for a signal more than a phone will.

This is all about external aerials and a decent LTE router.

How important is fast internet to you?
Maybe that needs to dictate where you live as much as schools and train stations might do?
From previous threads on here, if you really do have crap coverage, you are entering a world of pain, expense and hassle, which cant necessarily just be solved with money.

Thanks yes house next to the Cattery ,we did a walk around yesterday with my work Vodafone , wife's o2 and daughter EE phones. We got Nil , Nil and then Nil . No signal at all . Looking at the comparison websites when you use the postcode they all say yes , when you go into the sites and re check they all say no . Nil internet should not be a deal killer but it is a massive consideration right now .

You need to get to the first floor (or higher, if possible) and hang out a few windows to see if that improves things.

Sounds pretty awful to me. On the plus side, you're just 25 minutes from Wickwoods Country Club so sign up for their membership. biggrin

I've got internet links to a few very rural offices and properties with very poor internet .

4g is great when and if it works with a booster\aerial , but it doesn't look that great for you .

Leased line is another option but they are pricey , you could be looking at an expensive install cost and then £100- £500 a month (could be low end £

If you could get a 2/3mb adsl link then you could bond several connections together to give you 6-10mb , this can cost £90-250 a month depending on if you do yourself or pay a mAnaged company .

The cellular phone coverage in that area is poor at best, I don’t bother making calls pretty much anywhere near that neck of the woods - shame because it’s a nice place to live.

If you don’t mind me saying, have you thought of looking slightly towards Storrington or West Chiltington?

Have you checked to see if there's any rural broadband groups / initiative covering the area?

Colleague in a tiny hamlet in Bucks has been using wireless broadband for a few years and they've just put FTTH in.

You can ignore my booster advice then. They need 2-3 bars to work with. The are great at taking out of reach signal and bringing it indoors where you need it. As you don't have any outdoors you are stuffed with regards to signal boosters.

I'd be looking at a very long pole with an antenna on it, then boosting that, if, that is, there is enough at the end of that long pole.

Alternatively I think satellite internet might be a solution.
